Change is good!  We are excited about expanding our PURE Bikram Yoga family with the additional of PURE Bikram Yoga North Austin (formerly Yogagroove).  Please continue to be patient while we merge systems. Starting January 15th, your memberships will be good at all five studio locations!

 

We will now have 5 locations!  This means more teachers and more yoga classes to choose from!  We thank you for committing to your Bikram Challenge this year.  Save the date for our March 14th, 2013 Final Challenge Celebration at Mercury Hall.  Sign up for a 30-Day Challenge, or create your own "Custom Challenge" (NEW FOR 2013).

THE EIGHT LIMBS OF YOGA

 

Last Sunday, Libby Cox began to scratch the surface of an endless topic of the ages: the ancient Yoga Sutras.  She gave us a glimpse into yoga philosophy, and focused on the "yamas," the self-restraint, self-control and discipline in our yoga practice, the "shall not" in our dealings with the external world.  Her entertaining discussion points about the 8 limbs of yoga helped us start to apply ancient words, ideas, and thoughts to our yoga practice and daily life.  

 

YAMAS (translated from Sanskrit)

1.  Ahimsa: compassion

2.  Satya: truth

3.  Asteya: abundance

4.  Bramachara: wise use of social energy

5.  Aparigraha: letting go

 

Here are a few "homework" assignments to help you apply different aspects of yoga and take your yoga practice OFF your mat:

 

1.  Extend compassion to a perfect stranger once a day!  Whether this is in traffic, the grocery store, or in the yoga room react to others with kindness and without judgement. 

 

2.  Take one item OFF of your "To Do" list this week.  Life gets busy!  Make choices to support YOU in sustaining the proper amount of energy you need to function well at work, with your family, and even at yoga.

 

3.  Find opportunities to create abundance in your practice, your life, and your relationships.

Join Us on Sunday January 13 - Live and In Person - for the Hydration Secret Scrolls and discover why Your Water May Not Be Hydrating You

Yoga Nutrition: Secrets of Hydration and Superfoods 
 

Arttemis and I are excited to see you at our "Yoga Nutrition" talk on Sunday, January 13, at the downtown studio. Join us promptly at 7:30pm - we have lots to share about the Secrets of Hydration and Superfoods before we do our live juicing demonstration with the Omega VRT350 HD - our FAVORITE juicer! 

Hydration, hydration, hydration - you hear the word used a lot, but do you really know what it means for you? How do you know when you are well hydrated? How do you know when you need better hydration? Is hydration really just about how much water you drink? Or is there more to it? (Oh yes - there is certainly more to it!)

How do you know if you need better hydration? 

  • Do you think more about when the next water break is than your posture alignment?
  • Do you guzzle multiple bottles of water during class?
  • Do you drink Gatorade even though you know it is a glorified soft drink because it is a convenient form of electrolytes?
  • Do you want to punch the teacher every time they say "Smiling Happy Face?"

If any of the above applies to you, I understand. You are busy; you have lots more to think about in your day than drinking water and staying hydrated. I have good news: there is a way to be better hydrated while drinking the same amount of water you are already drinking in a day - and even less in some cases.

When you are well hydrated during your Bikram class, you will  have a sip of water at 'party time', one going into the spine series, and a final drink at the final savasana.  You will be focused on your postures, your body and your class, and outside of the times mentioned above, thirst won't even enter your mind until class is complete. You may even enjoy hearing "Smiling Happy Face!"  Imagine how much more benefit you receive when your focus is on your body and alignment instead of your thirst!

My family/significant others are......

my amazing girlfriend, Meg and our two dogs, Kai and Koa. We're a bit of a nomadic group having lived in 4 states over the past 4 years. Austin makes number 5 and we're proud to call it home, at least for now :)

 

What I love most about Austin is......

all of the things you can find to do outdoors, the warmth, the laid back feel of the city, and the people.

 

 

My New Year's Resolutions for 2013 are.....

to complete the 60 day challenge!

 

My top 3 yoga tips to PURE Students are.....

1. Listen to your body

2. Go into the room with an open mind and an open heart and just see what happens

3. Don't be afraid to have fun!

 

My favorite hydration method is.....

Coconut water

 

My favorite healthy meal is.....

hmmmm....I have so many good meals that I can think of that it's hard to choose just one! Okay, if I'm at home I really like when we have Asian marinated tofu with sauteed shallots and mushrooms and steamed kale with sesame seeds. If I'm going out to dinner, I LOVE the vegetarian sushi at Uchiko and their brussel sprouts are delicious! And if I'm on the run, any of the juices at JuiceBox---my recent favorite has been the Beet Generation.

 

Things I avoid are.....
anything with meat in it :)




My favorite yoga clothing is.....

anything that will hold up to my sweaty self! And I'm also really digging the new Tonic shorts we just got in...I've got my eye on a few of them :)


My favorite yoga gear is.....

 my Manduka mat and eQua towel....I LOVE both of these! The mat is perfect for this type of practice and has a lifetime guarantee and the towel leaves no sweat behind to clean up.

 

My favorite yoga posture is.....
always changing. I feel like every few months my favorite posture changes depending on how my body is changing. Right now I'd have to say that the triangle pose is my new favorite. I know, I know...I'm supposed to hate the triangle but when I first started Bikram, my right hip popped out of place every time I got down into the posture. Now my hips have strengthened and I've gained more flexibility, which allows me to stick the posture almost every time. It's really awesome to see how this practice really does heal your body, if you just let it.

My favorite yoga tip is.....

don't let your mind get the best of you.


My advice to PURE Challengers is.....

stay positive and take one day at a time!
