The Basics
Be on time! Every minute of a Bikram Yoga class is important. Entering class late is disruptive and disrespectful to other students, and also disrupts your nervous system! During the busy Challenge Season, allow for more traffic and parking time and more crowds to navigate through. Your goal should be to be set up and ready at least 5 minutes before the scheduled class time. This way you can take a few breaths and have an even better class!
Be prepared! Plan the night before so that you have your mat, towels, water bottle, change of clothes, etc. ready for your next day. Hatha yoga is a discipline of the mind as well as the body, so practice this aspect continuously.
Other Etiquette Points
No talking during class!Please refrain from talking during class. Practice stillness in between postures and when transitioning, move quietly. These habits create awareness, enhance concentration, and relax the body and the mind. After class, please continue the silence by exiting the yoga room quietly.
Stay in the yoga room. Once class begins, do your best to stay in the yoga room. In the event that an emergency may require you to leave, please leave and return to your mat in between postures to reduce distracting your fellow classmates.
Be courteous to others. The yoga room is a sanctuary. Please be aware of how your behavior may affect others. Be clean, perfume free, and quiet. No food is allowed.
Keep your eyes on yourself. We practice from the inside out. When you can finish your practice without knowing what the person next to you is wearing or even who else was in the room, you'll know you were truly focused.
Abandon the competitive mind-set. Yoga is absolutely non-competitive. It is not just a "work-out." It is not just "cross-training." It is a practice, which makes the body stronger, more flexible, and generally healthier. But the aim is to calm the mind, open the heart and accelerate our evolution.
Accept who you are. Rest sometimes. "Do what you can, with what you have, with where you are." Remember: "Wherever, whenever in our life we begin yoga, is perfect." No experience or flexibility is required.

What are you doing with your new-found levels of energy, clarity, and optimism? When I prioritize my own health and happiness, I fill my inner-well. I am happy, optimistic and creative. I think clearly, I find solutions faster, and I am so enthusiastic that I naturally share my energy and excitement with others. Here is the delicious irony: when I make me my highest priority, I have more to give others and I give with more enthusiasm, passion, and presence. Is it time to re-prioritize yourself? Jonathon was a former manager of facilities at PURE Bikram Yoga from September 2009 until March 2012 when he decided to pursue a real estate career in the ever growing Austin realty market. Check out his real estate website.
Jonathon was one of the original founders of PURE Action, Inc., in June of 2011 and remains in the Treasurer role of that non-profit organization. You'll see him regularly teaching the Sunday 5:30pm class and the Tuesday morning 8am at our Downtown studio.
