The Holidays are all about family, and here at PURE Bikram Yoga the word "family" is synonymous with "community." You all are our community and our yoga family here in Austin, Tx. You make each day, every class, what it is because of your warmth and energy. Thank you for being a part of it all. None of us could do it without all of us. Especially when it comes to health and happiness, it takes a village...

We have a wonderful community at PURE! Take the opportunity to get to know each other as you are practicing more frequently. Introduce yourself to your neighbors before class, ask a teacher or staff member a question you've had about your practice, share your favorite hydration methods with each other, or meet someone for lunch this week.
Remember there are Extra Credit assignments in the Challenge Program that have great suggestions for things to do to get more involved!
- Keep a yoga journal or blog about your Challenge (or follow Mardy's blog). (link)
- Practice at all four PURE Bikram Yoga locations: Cedar Park, Downtown, South, and Westlake.
- Take class from all 26 teachers.
- Establish posture/practice goals.
- Ride your bike or carpool to class.
- Have lunch with a new yoga buddy.
- Quit two habits for one week and see what happens!
- Watch movies about improving your diet-this will inspire you to make healthy choices in 2014.
- GET A MASSAGE! You are working hard! Massage really helps your body adjust, heal, and relax.

Community Cheer
I love this week's topic: community; come-unity - what a great word! When we are gathered together in unified focus we are in community. Participating in class each day is a great reminder of how many different people from all walks of life with varying backgrounds and beliefs can work together with unified focus (on one point in the mirror - do not even blink your eyes!).
Nice, Krystalle, but what does community have to do with superfoods? Simple: superfoods, like yoga, offer an accelerated path to bettering ourselves, and the best way to make the world a better place is by bettering ourselves first. Superfoods, and a healthy lifestyle in general, require people to make major life changes to integrate and receive their benefits. This is where community comes in.
Change is easier when you have support and guidance. Here are a few ways you can receive your community's support in making new choices for your health:
- Host potlucks with friends and use different health themes for each one: raw foods, macrobiotic, gluten free, farm fresh. Each person brings a dish in alignment with your current theme and you all experience delicious new foods together.
- Visit New Restaurants: Have healthy restaurants on your go-to list where you can meet friends: Beets Cafe, Casa de Luz, and Daily Juice Hyde Park are some of my favorites.
- Jump In Together: Invite a few of your friends to make a new health commitment with you - something new and different that stretches you outside your normal way of doing things and is still achievable for you. Achieving your goal together with your friends makes your success even sweeter.
- Cleanse in Community: Cleansing is a great way to jump start new healthy eating habits and practices. First, choose a cleanse program that is a good fit for you. Then invite friends to join you for your cleanse. Especially invite your beloved. Jeff and Mardy discovered cleansing together at home offers awesome support. They enjoyed juicing together in the evenings.
You have two awesome opportunities to cleanse in community. These are NOT Strict Cleanses! Both of these cleanses are designed to be fun educational challenges that give you awesome experience with new foods and new lifestyle habits.
Many cleanse participants have reported increased energy and endurance, improved flexibility, better mental focus and clarity, reduced inflammation, and better joint health. Some have even reported better sleep and improved relationships - cool!
- 3-Day PURE Cleanse - Get yourself a cleanse buddy or group of buddies and start your cleansing experience with this simple 3-Day cleanse. You receive ebooks, videos, and emails to educate, motivate, and inspire you. With raw juices and Bikram Power-Smoothies, you will not be hungry - you will feel well nourished.
- 7-Day Jump Start New Year's Cleanse - This cleanse is also a live community event! If all liquids sounds too extreme for you, choose the raw food option and cleanse while you eat - now there's a concept!
Here is what one of our recent cleansers said, "My energy level is huge, my attention span is sharp and my memory seems to be much better. I am not sure what has happened but I am not the person I used to be and I feel amazing!"
Click here to see our lineup of awesome events and classes. Purchase your membership and invite your friends. Better yet, purchase gift certificates and give them as Holiday gifts, then join the cleanse with your friends. Happy cleansing! |
Park Valley Inn - Senior Yoga
With only 2 months at Park Valley Inn, a division of Trisun Healthcare, PURE Action, Inc. is making an impact! Our classes consist of 12-15 students, all in wheelchairs. After the 30-minute yoga session (Tues/Thurs), everyone is so appreciative and excited to come back the next time. We always begin with Pranayama Breathing. You can see how much more alert everyone is after 2 sets of breathing. They love Eagle Pose! Everyone giggles, trying to twist their arms like pretzels. One of our students remarks, "I can't do this one!" I quickly rebut, "Don't be frustrated; just make an "X" with your arms!" I remind them that they can perform any of the postures (especially Pranayama Breathing and Wind Removing Pose) in bed, on a day that they do not feel as well. They like that idea.
The family of one of the residents attended class one day. After the son twisted and turned his shoulder several times during Pranayama Breathing, as if in pain, I inquired if he had a rotator cuff injury. He looked at me in amazement, as if I could read minds. I told him to just do what he could do that day and to take it easy. After only 30 minutes of yoga, he said that his shoulder felt so much better! He promised to continue practicing when he returned home.
One of our students recently suffered a stroke, is in a wheelchair and has use of one side of her body. After only 4 classes, she has improved her range of motion and speech. Then there is the mental effect of the yoga. Students are less critical of themselves, focusing more on what they CAN do rather than what they CAN'T do. Several students who attended classes in the beginning seemed skeptical, did not practice many of the postures and did not return. Now they are back and trying all of the postures! Residents are bonding in a new way, creating their own yoga community. They greet each other in the hallway with, "Namaste."
I was thrilled to tell one of our ladies that she can continue her yoga practice when she moves to Wyoming Springs. PURE Action will have a yoga program at this assisted living facility opening soon. This student is challenged by gastrointestinal issues, and when she attends class, she feels tremendous improvement. The testimonials are endless.
Most thrilling is the Park Valley Inn Yoga Challenge coming in January! Practice 20 classes and receive a PURE Action - Yoga Is Medicine t-shirt. They are empowered, taking control of their health! It has never been more true..."It's never too late, you're never too old, you're never too sick, to start again from scratch."

I practice yoga to.... Stay mentally and physically healthy. It's part of my daily routine. There is no other physical activity that has changed my body so dramatically and concurrently provided mental meditation. I LOVE to practice! Bikram yoga keeps me happy inside and out!
My family/significant others are...... My wonderful husband Jon and I have two children, Anna and Clayton (we call him Nemo). Anna is a graphic designer working in New York. She is incredibly creative and got none of her skills from me! Nemo is a senior at Westlake and a competitive tennis player. He is wading through the recruiting process to play in college next year. He got all of his skills from me! Jon owns a recording studio here in Austin and has been known to let the Pure staff in to party:)!
What I love most about Austin is...... SUNNY AND WARM!! After living in Minneapolis for 20 years I don't need to think about this one!
My New Year's Resolutions for 2013 are..... Simple.........make every day count.
My top 3 yoga tips to PURE Students are..... - It's all in the breathing.......figure this out and the rest is easy.
- Show up.
- Often.
My favorite hydration method is..... I drink Vita Coco before and after each class I take or teach along with lots of water. Occasionally, if I am really depleted a V8 juice is magic. (Emmy taught me that one)
My favorite healthy meal is..... My husband is an awesome cook and makes a fabulous salmon and veggie dish.
Things I avoid are..... Complacency, negative attitudes, arrogance.
My favorite yoga clothing is..... Shakti fits my body the best. I know what size to order and it always fits me. It lasts a long time as well.
My favorite yoga gear is..... I'm not into gear much.
My favorite yoga posture is..... I love Standing Head to Knee. It requires strength, determination, balance, flexibility.........everything you've got!
My favorite yoga tip is..... Come back tomorrow..................
My advice to PURE Challengers is..... Dont' think, just do!!!!! |
