As we discussed last week, Yoga is restraining the mind-stuff (Chitta) from taking various forms (Vrittis).  The mind, to have non-attachment, must be clear, good, and rational.  Why and how should we practice? Pantanjali's Yoga Sutras 1.12-1.14 discusses habits and practice.

Sutra I.12 = abhyaasavairaaj~jaabhyaaM tannirodhaH = Their control is by practice and non-attachment

Sutra I.13 = tatra sthitau yatno'bhyaasaH = Continuous struggle to keep them (the Vrittis) perfectly restrained is practice

Sutra I.14 = sa tu dIraghakaalanairantaryasatkaaraasevito dRuDhabhUmiH = Practice becomes firmly grounded when well attended to for a long time, without break and in all earnestness

Emmy Cleaves, Bikram's senior most teacher, gracefully and succinctly echoes the ancient Yoga Sutras. She always states, "practice with intensity, precision, and frequency." This call to action develops true awareness and accountability from within. By abiding by this simple rule, we can establish habits to support a healthy body, mind, and life.

Intensity sparks passion. Every day that you come to yoga, you are giving yourself the time and space to self-reflect, to get to know yourself, and to heal your body and mind. Intense focus creates energy that can spur intention to muster up will power, determination, and strength in all areas in your life.

Precision establishes discipline. Alignment in each posture enables your organs and systems an opportunity to connect and expand their functionality. Pay close attention to the teacher's instructions: go word by word, in order to line up the body and free your mind. Work hard on alignment, because you will achieve more depth in each posture and your practice as you create the space for your body to improve.

Frequency develops habits. Establish a routine that serves your practice. You'll find that your current habits are probably deeply ingrained in your body, mind, and life.  Choose to take responsibility and action to make conscious choices that support your decision to practice daily. Eat well, hydrate, rest, remain positive, and avoid stress as much as possible.

Here are a few suggestions to help improve your yoga practice, and maintain cleanliness in the yoga studios.

  1. Drink a glass of water when you wake up: it's been 6-8 hours since you had anything to drink, so you are probably dehydrated!
  2. Follow Krystalle's Hydration tips and habits in the Superfood section. These tips will give you maximum nutrition and hydration for your practice.
  3. Get to the yoga studio before class time begins. This allows you time to greet the teacher, ask any posture questions you may have, socialize with fellow yogis, set up your mat, and get into the zone! As class starts to fill up and you see people running around trying to get a spot, you'll already be blissed out and relaxed, ready to get into your practice.
  4. Bring only what you need into the yoga room: yourself, yoga mat, towel, and water.
  5. The changing rooms have lockers, cubbies, benches, shoe racks, and hooks. Use them! Extra hand-towels, more drinks, phones, keys, purses, bags, "just-in-case" items take up space, especially as classes get more full.
  6. Keep tissues on your mat - not on the carpet!  This reduces trash in the yoga room and also helps contain germs when colds strike!
  7. Set up using the lines to allow there to be enough room as classes fill up.  Get cozy with your neighbor if needed - have no attachment to extra space.  The more people doing yoga, the greater the energy in the class, and the better for you to learn from!
  8. Stay on your mat.  Mats are 70-72" (about 6 feet long) and meant to be long enough for you to lie completely on them: head to toes - not partially on the mat and partially on the carpet.   This helps the carpet remain as dry as possible throughout the day.
  9. If you borrow a rental mat, quietly spray down and clean BOTH sides with the spray and towels provided, and then hang it up on the hooks.  Place your USED cleaning towel in the bins OUTSIDE the room.
  10. Take all of your belongings with you when you leave.  Be disciplined enough to keep all of your supplies with you.  Washing and folding clothes and towels, packing your bag, preparing your water, picking your outfit for the day all become a regular routine.
  11. Be thoughtful even in these seemingly mundane tasks, especially as you develop a daily practice.  Routine establishes habits, and habits create character, personality, and attitude.

The Pure Challenge is a great opportunity to make more conscious choices, revive self-awareness, and give back to your community. Patanjali challenged yogis years ago:

"When you are inspired by some great purpose, some extraordinary project, all your thoughts break their bonds; your mind transcends limitations, your consciousness expands in every direction, and you find yourself in a new, great, and wonderful world.  Dormant forces, faculties and talents become alive, and you discover yourself to be a greater person by far than you ever dreamed yourself to be."

This Challenge is extraordinary and gives us great purpose to support PURE Action.  What habits can you establish this challenge season to spark change in your practice, your attitude, your character, your life?  Let us know your intentions, goals, or even your struggles: our teachers and staff are here to support your Challenge in any way possible.

Healthy Habits and Righteous Routines

It's a good thing I enjoy routine, structure, and preparation. I credit my organization and planning skills for getting me to class at 6am each morning with my smiling, happy face. =)  I have adopted some healthy habits that support my practice and keep me energized, flexible and focused. I am sharing them here - use what works for you and create some awesome habits of your own.

Krystalle's 6am Yoga Rituals:

  1. Get a Head Start on Hydration - I make a gallon of fresh green juice and drink a tall glass around 7pm to bathe my cells in hydrating minerals. The remaining juice goes in the refrigerator in a glass jug for tomorrow. (Actually, Arttemis makes our juice - he's the juice man! Here are some of his recipes ).
  2. Sleep Well - Your body rejuvenates while you sleep and generates more energy for tomorrow's class. I like to be in bed by 9 pm when I take 6 am classes. That gives me 8 hours of deep rest during vital rejuvenation time. Every hour of sleep before midnight is equal to 4 hours of sleep after midnight.
  3. Rise 'N Shine - I wake up an hour before class and drink 12 - 16 oz of green juice. This gives me plenty of time to mineralize and hydrate my body before class begins.
  4. Wetter Water - I add extra minerals  to my water for class. More minerals = better hydration = fewer class interruptions = more focus = quieter mind = much better yoga practice.
  5. HYDRATE - I bring 16 - 32 oz of green juice with me to the studio, keep it in the locker room, and drink it immediately after class. Green juice is the most refreshing, hydrating, mineralizing after-class drink I have experienced so far. Ahhhhh!
  6. Replenish & Refuel - When I get home I make my morning smoothie. I am on a Chocolate Cherry Smoothie kick lately - delicious! My smoothies taste amazing and are deeply nourishing and restorative when I add a scoop of One World Whey.

Way Cool Whey

One World Whey has become one of our favorite superfood smoothie additions. I used to be a personal trainer and have had lots of experience with whey protein powders. They were one of the causes of my digestive issues and health challenges. This whey is different; it has been healing and nurturing for my body. Here's why:

  • It is the FIRST 100% UNHEATED, cold temperature processed, 100% all-natural, bioactive, grass pasture raised milk-whey protein.
  • Adding One World Whey™ to your Bikram Yoga Practice could potentially have the most NOTICEABLE impact on your body and how you FEEL during and after your Yoga.
  • This whey is so delicious - it makes every smoothie taste like a creamy milkshake! The Vanilla flavor works in almost every smoothie recipe.
  • It helps you build lean muscle, reverse the aging process, eliminate excess body fat, and detox heavy metals and fluoride from your body.
  • This product improves recovery and helps you cleanse by boosting your liver and glutathione levels.
  • At just $2.03 per serving, One World Whey is in the same price category as lower quality whey products that have been pasteurized and heat processed.
  • Many people who have dairy challenges find they can enjoy One World Whey with great benefit. It is casein free, anti-inflammatory and helps heal your digestive system.

Kathy Durham says: "One World Whey is great during the day to help me feel nourished and full.  I still use this in my morning/mid-day smoothies."

Jeff Chen's favorite smoothie is Mardy's "Cocoa Channel" with added cacao butter and Chocolate One World Whey.

PURE Action Yoga is Medicine Breaking Addictions - Austin Recovery

Austin Recovery is a local non-profit Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation facility open since 1967. They offer both 30 and 90-day inpatient programs, and some intensive outpatient as well. Austin Recovery offers treatment to the most under-served in our local community.

AustinRecoveryLogo

Each week, volunteers from PURE Action teach both men and women classes in Buda and North Austin. Ages range from 18 to 80, and most clients have never taken a yoga class before. We offer a 45-minute Bikram posture-based class and conduct surveys to measure the perceived stress levels of clients before and after the yoga program. The results are immediate and extraordinary - You should see their Smiling, Happy faces! Here are just a few comments from clients (names withheld):

"Yoga is exactly what I've been needing."

"This is my favorite part of the week."

"I didn't really believe this Yoga thing until Today. Thank you."

"I really believe that Yoga will change my Life."

"I can't wait to start doing Yoga once I graduate."

We listened, and didn't stop there. After graduation, clients are offered a free one-week unlimited pass at any PURE Bikram Yoga location. They are assigned a PURE Mentor who will assist them with any yoga-related questions during their physical and mental detox. After the first week, clients are offered a total of up to 60 days of yoga at a reduced rate, in exchange for a survey to continue our study. All the money is donated back to PURE Action to fund more research and community programs. Several students have already taken advantage of this opportunity, and now they share testimonials about how much yoga has changed their lives. One of our graduates has even expressed a desire to go back to Austin Recovery, but this time as a yoga demonstrator, not a client!

Our goal for this community is to exchange harmful addictions for a healthy lifestyle through yoga. You can be part of the solution in several ways.

  • DONATE. Donation classes are held each Saturday at the PURE Bikram Yoga Cedar Park & South locations. It's a great way to introduce a friend to Bikram Yoga while donating to a good cause.
  • CREATE A CAMPAIGN. With the PURE Challenge underway, another really fun way to spread the word to your friends and family is to create a SNOBALL campaign, where you can customize donations based on your personal preferences. For example, each time you take a class (or when UT scores a touchdown), it will trigger a predetermined donation amount for you and your supporters. It's completely customizable, and you can post your campaign on Facebook for everyone to see. Details can be found under the "Donate" tab at PureAction.org or type "PURE Action" to search for us on Snoball.com.
  • SHARE and LIKE. Share our Facebook page and like us. It's free, just takes a few seconds, and is a great way to spread the word about the amazing things we are doing here at PURE Action.

"Share your Passion by supporting our Research and your Community. Empower People with the Tools to change their own Lives. Find Purpose by Helping Others who need it the Most."

I practice yoga to...
tune in and reach out

My family/significant others are...
My niece once hung up the phone with my father, saying "okay, bye, I'm all out of Yes words." From the view of a child in love with discovery, it was devoid of any "yes man" agenda or judgement about yes or no or apology for herself. Her engagement was "Yes, I'm here" and now it's time to be quiet. In a challenging world, I try to pay attention to Yes and to the time to be quiet.

What I love most about Austin is...
Music, passionflower vines and grackles. I know, I know. Grackles? Not a good presence overhead, granted, but they have a better range of vocabulary than many songwriters in Nashville.

My New Year's Resolutions for 2013 are...
Change resolutions to aspirations and cast off the limitations of old beliefs. I want to collaborate with musicians here and perform again. That was why I came to Austin to begin with and it has been too long since my last effort with HOWL.

My Top 3 Yoga Tips to PURE Students are...
  • Explore your view. Focus can happen because you will it and narrow it forward or because you widen your view and open it up.
  • Explore relinquishing boundaries. The boundary between what you consider the mind and what you consider the body may not be one.
  • Explore the subtle. There are many increments between your heels and your toes, between the outside and the insides of your feet, between the front of your center and the back of your center and from your skull to the floor.
My favorite hydration method is...
Rootbeer floats. But I use Endura instead.

My favorite healthy meal is...
Tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, squash and green beans from my father's garden in Tennessee with collard greens and cornbread from a cast iron skillet. Nothing better.

Things I avoid are...
Soda. I love love love root beer, but avoid it.

My favorite yoga clothing is...
The Pure Flame Hoodies. They need no elaboration. They are the perfect garment.

My favorite yoga gear is...
What is on sale and what survives my barbaric laundry practices.

My favorite yoga posture is...
Toe stand. It is beautiful to watch happen. I have worked through knee and hip challenges for years and have never experienced it myself. I aspire.

My favorite yoga tip is...
Think of the floor as meeting up with your feet. You don't just totter on top of it by accident. It's a collaboration. Your feet, your knees, your elbows your hands, your head all press into the floor for alignment, for grounding, for energy. All the poses unfurl from your relationship to the ground.

My advice to PURE Challengers is...
Learn to listen more deeply to your own mind and body as you are Challenged so that you learn for yourself rather than compare and measure yourself to others.
