Approximately 2000 years ago, Patanjali wrote the Yoga Sutras, and it has become the most widely referenced manual to establish a true yoga practice. Sutra 1.1 establishes the subject of union.  The goal of yoga is to connect the body and mind. Sutras 1.2 and 1.3 state that yoga calms the fluctuations of the mind. In our daily practice of Asana (yoga postures), we develop the discipline to achieve this attainable goal - one moment and one posture at a time. The cultivation of your mind through daily practice will further your acquaintance with reality, help awaken your senses, and eventually stimulate enlightenment and growth in whatever condition you are trying to improve.

 

Yoga Sutra 1.1 = atha yogānuåāsanam = Now it is time to teach union

 

Yoga Sutra 1.2 = yogaå citta-vėtti-nirodhaļ = Still the fluctuations of the mind

 

Yoga Sutra 1.3 = tadā draęųuļ svarūpe 'vasthānam = Then, pure awareness can abide in its very nature.

 

A consistent yoga practice cultivates the opportunity to transform. Daily observations of hydration, diet, breath, alignment, depth, and control of the mind supply us with a lifetime of goals in order to increase self-awareness. This consciousness supplies our self with a daily emphasis of achieving balance between body, mind, and life.  The more we practice, the more aware we become, and in this awareness we establish union with our selves, our lives, our community.

 

Each posture in the Bikram series aligns the body for maximum relaxation at the end of class. Compressing and extending the muscles, tendons, and fibers of the structure of the body give us true access to toning and regulating the function of our organs. Each part of the series adds up to the sum of holistic health when practiced regularly, sparking vitality and energy. Bikram Choudhury simply states, "a happy, healthy spine equals a happy, healthy life."

 

Make each day a new adventure and an opportunity to truly reflect upon the changes that are happening in your practice. This can happen in many ways: breathing patterns, alignment and depth of postures, attitudes, and attachment (or eventually lack of) to experiences throughout your day. Be kind to yourself and your community at home, work, and the yoga studio.

 

Together we are on a path to better health and better choices in the New Year. Let this PURE Challenge 2013 and the lessons and habits you establish in the hot room radiate into the rest of your life. Enjoy the journey and be willing to receive guidance from our staff and each other. We all learn from experience and can help support each other and our community in this process. Have fun, stay light, and be refreshed every day of your practice.

In case you haven't heard the buzz, Pure Action is funding a study which will establish the caloric expenditure of Bikram yoga. Headed by Dr. Brian Tracy (below center), data collection began in September by members of the Neuromuscular Research laboratory at Colorado State University. A lecturer at Bikram yoga teacher training and the first to ever publish a Bikram yoga intervention study back in 2008, Dr. Tracy is becoming well known within the Bikram yoga community. He has since continued his work publishing a second Bikram yoga study earlier this year and is now conducting the caloric expenditure study with support from Pure Action.

Much speculation has arisen over the years regarding the caloric expenditure of hot or Bikram yoga and several websites have posted estimations ranging from 500 to 1,000 calories per class. However, no studies have been conducted and published on this topic. Caloric expenditure can be estimated via heart rate monitors, which aren't the best technique given the variable relationship between heart rate and caloric expenditure. A better method is indirect calorimetry, a technique used to determine the intensity of various forms of exercise by measuring oxygen consumption. Oxygen is consumed during metabolism and is more indicative of caloric expenditure than heart rate responses. 

The caloric expenditure study at Colorado State University is measuring oxygen consumption using a portable metabolic system which can be used in a heated environmental chamber. Study participants perform the 26 postures in a temperature controlled chamber in response to Bikram's instructional CD wearing the Oxycon metabolic system (below).  

 

This is the first study which will provide a more accurate determination of the caloric expenditure of Bikram yoga. Other measurements include sweat loss, body core temperature, perceived exertion, and respiratory exchange ratio. The respiratory exchange ratio provides a gauge of the proportional carbohydrate and fat utilization during a given activity. This pertinent information will be published worldwide next year, but since we're too excited to wait, we've decided to provide a special preview of the results at the Pure Bikram Yoga Challenge Party in March, 2013! Attend the party and you will see the results before the rest of the world.

 

This is the first of many exciting Pure Action funded projects and we are in the planning stages of many more next year!

"POTENTIALITY" AT THE UP COLLECTIVE

Look familiar? Some of you have been asking about the floral installation at our Downtown front desk. PURE Students Teruko Nimura, Tahila Shireem Chavez Mintz, Emily Mitchell, and Teresa Harrison are involved in this installation at the  UP Collective at 2326 E Cesar Chavez, Austin, TX 78702.

 

Check it out this December 8 from 7pm to 10pm (free admission).

 

 "Potentiality" will consist of installations reflecting the powerful potential of collective efforts, inspired by Native American and Japanese cultural traditions. The artists, Nimura and Mintz, have conducted participatory events for the Austin community to create objects that will be included in the exhibition.

 

Teruko Nimura is an Austin based artist who creates mixed media installations, sculptures, drawings and paintings exploring ideas of collective efforts, Asian customs, and personalhistory using ceramics, plaster, fabric, paper, wax, wood, and other materials.

 

Tahila Shireem Chavez Mintz is an Austin based photographer. She works nationally and internationally, focusing predominately on culture, women, and indigenous traditions. Her work is lens, collage and bead based. She received her MFA from the University of Texas at Austin, and studied at Filmova a televizni fakulta akademie Prague, Czech republic.
