Greetings!
With Thanksgiving behind us, December is a time for reflection of the past and contemplation for 2013. We are getting ahead of ourselves at PURE by starting our "Challenge Season" earlier. Starting this week, we are enrolling our PURE Challenge 2013 which commences this Saturday, December 1, 2012. Yes, that is this weekend! See the Challenge details below.
Why so early? What better way to manage the hustle, bustle and stress that often accompanies December? Getting into an early rhythm of daily, or at least 6x per week, yoga practice supplemented with healthy eating, hydration, and year-end giving will give you a head start to the New Year.
Join us on our journey!

Challenge Within Your PURE Challenge: Mineralize and Hydrate!
Are you a new Challenger or a PURE Challenge veteran? Either way, this article holds valuable information for you. How valuable? After Jeff and Mardy discovered this information, their insatiable urge to drink large amounts of water during class was quenched. That's right - even the owners of PURE Bikram benefitted from these advanced hydrating and mineralizing tips.
True hydration requires minerals - and lots of them. Electrolytes are minerals - specific mineral ions with an electrical charge that conducts electricity. Electrolytes regulate your nerve and muscle function, hydration levels, blood pH, blood pressure, and help rebuild damaged tissue.
When you exercise and sweat you lose electrolytes, mainly sodium and potassium. To maintain electrolyte concentrations and keep your body fluids stable and healthy, those electrolytes must be replaced. Water alone does not provide the amount of minerals and electrolytes you require for real hydration. Your best source of organic sodium and potassium is fresh green juice.
Live green juice is my favorite after-Bikram replenisher. To discover more about the awesome benefits of green juice, as well as the pitfalls of sports drinks and many more magnificent mineral musings, including the best juicer to use and the best places in town to buy cold pressed juice, check out my Mineralize and Hydrate blog.
Krystalle's Six Step Hydration Schedule
I know I am hydrated when I only have a sip of water at 'Party Time', more as a formality rather than a necessity. I know I am dehydrated when I am in a posture thinking about how to get another drink of water without interrupting my class or having it come out my nose in a chin-to-chest or forehead-to-knee posture. =) Being hydrated is much more convenient and comfortable. Here are your six simple steps to staying hydrated:
- Drink plenty of pure water with minerals throughout the day: at least 2 - 3 liters.
- Have a tall glass of juice in the evening after dinner or before bed.
- Practice yoga on an empty stomach. Have a small glass of juice and sip some water about an hour before class. Bring about a pint of fresh green juice with you to the studio.
- During class have water with minerals next to you. Have a drink at "Party Time".
- After class enjoy your green juice - the most refreshing, delicious energizer in all the land. As you drink it, you will feel your energy coming back and you will feel rejuvenated.
- 30 minutes to 1 hour after class make a delicious superfood smoothie and enjoy your instantaneous nutrition. Delicious!

Here are some world health statistics and rankings of the United States:
- #1 in Obesity at 31% of its population (vs. world-weighted average of 14%)
- #1 in Hypertension (33%)
- #1 in High serum Total Cholesterol (15%)
- #1 in Diabetes (12%) - 1 in 3 Americans born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime.
- >65 million Americans suffer from chronic back pain
How can the richest nation consume in excess of $2.2 trillion dollars annually ($7300 per person) and have the poorest health? We all have our opinions, but if you're part of the PURE Community, you can probably attest to the transformative benefits of yoga to our body, mind, and life. Imagine a world where everyone practiced yoga to maintain their health, still their minds, and balance their lives?
For centuries, India has used Hatha Yoga as a means of both physical and mental therapy. Not only has it been shown to reduce stress and promote well-being, it has been used to heal the body of many common and complex ailments. Only 15 to 20 million people in the U.S. have tried yoga, and significantly less practice regularly (3 or more times per week). We believe that greater awareness, knowledge, and regular practice of Hatha Yoga will have a significant impact on our "State of Health."
What is PURE Action?
We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization bringing the ancient benefits of yoga to mainstream medicine through scientific research, global education, and community programs. In our first year of existence, we've funded yoga research studies, created and participated in education forums, and delivered community yoga programs to under-served schools, senior living facilities, and other nonprofits. Learn more or donate today!
How can you help us "Heal the World with Yoga?"
As part of the 90-day Challenge, join us in raising funds for our 2013 programs. We've teamed up with Snoball.com to easily create a campaign to pledge a donation amount for each yoga class you take (or other activity you choose). It's easy!
Bring a friend to our Saturday afternoon Donation Classes at our South Austin and Cedar Park locations. These are 90-minute Bikram Yoga classes, but we've put out a jar for suggested $10-$15 donations which will support our Community Yoga Programs with Park Valley Inn (senior skilled nursing facility) and Austin Recovery. These classes are a great way to introduce a friend to Bikram Yoga and give to worthwhile causes in your community! - Cedar Park - 4:30pm - every Saturday
- South Austin - 4:00pm - every Saturday

I practice yoga to...
Prevent stagnation. A fluid, flowing body allows for a fluid, flowing mind. I also believe in the concept that if you use it, you'll never lose it. My family/significant others are... My family is my beloved brother Evan, who I believe is always with me. What I love most about Austin is... The people, the artistic community, and the food!
My New Year's Resolutions for 2013 are...- Complete a 90 day challenge.
- Start working at a spa or natural health center with my shiny new massage therapy license.
- Practice the advanced series weekly and compete in the fall.
- Get more sleep.
- Attend a few health retreats and workshops.
- Try every single food truck in Austin.
- Create and produce my first evening-length work.
My Top 3 Yoga Tips to PURE Students are...- Be kind to yourself. Each and every class you take is a valiant effort that deserves self-thanks.
- Don't be afraid to come to class completely wiped out and tired. Its remarkable to discover how much energy the yoga gives you.
- As you practice more and more, celebrate how good you feel in other parts of your life.
My favorite hydration method is... Juicing a whole head of celery with lemon, apple, and ginger and drinking that sucker down.
My favorite healthy meal is... Miso soup over rice, with a poached egg and a dash of sriracha.
Things I avoid are... Gluten, processed foods, and animal proteins that come from mass production sources.
My favorite yoga clothing is... Lululemon. The groove shorts are awesome for Bikram yoga: flattering, a slightly longer length, and they don't ride up. I'm also a fan of their pants and crops. For tops I love the Onzie and Phat buddha bandeau tops. The no-strap feature makes my neck and shoulders feel completely free.
My favorite yoga gear is... I don't have much in the way of yoga gear, but I love my new PURE hoodie for zipping on and off before and after class.
My favorite yoga posture is... Spine twisting pose. It feels so good at the end of class, and relaxes the nervous system while stimulating digestive organs.
My favorite yoga tip is... Let your practice be an anchor for you as your ride the waves of life's many changes.
My advice to PURE Challengers is... Surrender and have fun. Trust that you are so much stronger than you think you are.
