Superfood Spotlight

Feel Great this Thanksgiving - One Bite at a Time
Thanksgiving is time for sharing gratitude, celebrating friendships, and (for most people) indulging in large Holiday feasts. Most holiday meals include foods that are more dense and complex than you customarily eat in one sitting. Imagine your normal daily lunch. Now imagine your traditional holiday meal. Notice any difference? Most people will notice a huge difference: Holiday meals offer richer foods, more variety of food, and not-so-stellar food combining, plus a smorgasbord of highly processed desserts. It's enough to put you in a sugar-induced sleep just thinking about it.
Five Tested Tips for Your Healthier Holidays
Here are five tips to help you have enough energy after your Thanksgiving Dinner to jump in to your Black Friday gift shopping spree with gusto and enthusiasm. Or you can simply relax and giggle while you watch the rest of your family 'sleep off' their meals.
- Bring digestive enzymes! Eating more food in one sitting than normal often results in bloating, indigestion, tiredness, and gas. Enzymes to the rescue! Enzymes help you digest your food with grace and ease. They reduce bloating, gas, and indigestion and improve nutrient assimilation and absorption. Have 3-5 enzyme capsules with your meal (3 if you are eating all veggies, 5 if you are eating turkey or meats), and another 3 or 4 with dessert.
- Eat simply and colorfully: Fill your plate with vibrant green salad and lots of fresh veggies. Raw foods have a higher enzyme content than cooked foods. Eat your salad first to give your body a head start with enzymes, making way for smooth digestion.
- Eat slowly - and chew! With all the commotion, excitement, and extra people at holiday meals, it is tempting to eat too quickly. This creates favorable conditions for unfavorable conditions such as indigestion, heartburn, gas and bloating - ouch! Here is a very simple tip to help your holiday meal digest with grace and ease: chew your food! Be present with your meal. Look at each bite of food before it enters your mouth. Taste and experience your food while you are chewing. Chewing also increases your body's own natural enzyme production.
- Bring your own: Bring something you enjoy eating that is live, raw, full of nutrients and supports digestion. Cultured veggies (sauerkraut), a fresh salad, or fresh sprouts are excellent options. If you are more adventuresome you can make and bring your own raw dessert.
- Give dessert its deserved spotlight. Instead of having dessert with your meal, give your food time to digest. Have your dessert an hour or two after you eat. In the meantime, visit with your family. Dessert can wait!
Personal Gratitude:
This Thanksgiving I am grateful for my practice at Pure Bikram Yoga. I love my morning yoga ritual. I appreciate starting my days with pure focus and attention. I enjoy feeling cleansed and refreshed after class, ready to jump in and enjoy my day, and I am especially grateful to have my body back. When I started a few weeks ago, pain prevented me from entering certain postures. Now I am grateful to participate fully in each class. I feel strong, supported and aligned. Thank you Jeff, Mardy, and Pure Bikram teachers and staff for your dedication, commitment, and generosity. I appreciate you!

"Off the Mat"
with Traci Bemis
PURE Front-Desk Staff
(South & Downtown)
 | Traci and Clive Bemis |
1. I practice yoga to.....feel healthy, balanced and have a happy spine and body.
2. My family/significant others are......My Dad, Mom, sister and brother are all in Austin (along with lots of extended family). We're a tight clan. Chris, my hub of 5 years and Clive, my sweet 2 year old are the most wonderful gifts. We will be welcoming baby Marlo around the new year. I'm sure she will shake our world up a bit and bring new joys.
3. What I love most about Austin is......I don't have a "most." I love the people, food, music, lake, energy, eccentricity, the gazillion 5k run/walks, and the Whole Foods mecca. Oh, and the weather! I like the warm weather a lot.
4. My New Year's Resolutions for 2013 are.....Do a juice/smoothie fast after the baby comes.
5. My top 3 yoga tips to PURE Students are.....
1. Yes, it's a time investment, but YOU and your health are worth it.
2. Don't take yourself too seriously...have fun!
3. Listen to your body. Rest and back off as needed.
6. My favorite hydration method is.....Coconut water.
7. My favorite healthy meal is.....A juice and the Asian Slaw Salad at Beets Cafe. Really anything there is incredibly tasty. Snap Kitchen is a new favorite spot for me too.
8. My favorite yoga clothing is.....Bandeau tops are a favorite of mine. And I want to buy any Tonic apparel that strolls through the door. (So soft!)
9. My favorite yoga gear is.....I love the Manduka mat, and really want to try their eQua towel that fits perfectly to my mat.
10. My favorite yoga posture is.....Locust pose...no, really. I can tell it's healing my elbows and shoulders and it's starting to feel good. Or at least I'm convincing myself of that. And it's certainly not the prettiest posture, but I like it the best.
11. My favorite yoga tip is.....What you eat and drink plays a big part in how you'll feel and practice in class. Be mindful of what you're putting in your body. "Garbage in, garbage out."
12. My advice to PURE Challengers is.....Get a yoga buddy who will support you along the way.

About Dr. Massey

Richard Massey's formal education in medicine began in 1974 when he served 3 years as a medical corpsman in the United States Air Force.
He then attended the College of Pharmacy at the University of Texas in Austin and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1983.
Dr Massey gave up his career as a board certified anesthesiologist in 1997 after observing natural approaches reversing diseases he had been taught were incurable. "What I have witnessed over the last 15 years leaves me in awe of the body's healing wisdom. It seems nothing is incurable with the use of a few simple tools, the willingness to take an honest look at one's life, and the courage to change. The path of wholeness is our birthright." -- Dr. Richard Massey
