Volunteers for MLK Jr. Day & Beyond

Next Monday, January 21st all of the Pima County Public Library branches will be closed in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Day holiday. Many people will be volunteering in response to the MLK Day of Service initiative. Even if your nonprofit doesn't have a specific activity for volunteers to participate in right now, you may want to take a look at some of the tools and resources for recruiting and training volunteers for the future. If you want to volunteer for MLK Day, check out some ongoing or one-day volunteer opportunities.

New Jazz Works: Commissioning & Ensemble Development

CMA supports the creation of new works by professional U.S.-based jazz artists and helps assure that these compositions will be performed and appreciated. A multi-phase program, New Jazz Works also offers activities that develop the band leader's career-related business skills. Founded in the year 2000, New Jazz Works has since provided support for more than 140 works that reflect the multiple styles of contemporary jazz. Grants of up to $16,000 will be made.

Creation & Touring Grants for Theater Projects

Creation & Touring Grants provide funds for creation and preparation for touring of collaborative, devised theater projects. These grants are highly competitive and are awarded to approximately six projects annually. Preference is given to those projects which are within 18 months of being ready to tour.Awards range from $80,000 to $130,000.

Thriving Cultures Program

The Surdna Foundation believes that cultural organizations, programs and projects often provide the opportunity for exploration of values and can act as catalysts for the building of just, sustainable communities. At their best, they contribute to fair access to social goods such as rights, opportunities and dignity. Currently, Surdna's Thriving Cultures Program will accept letters of inquiry in three lines of work: Teens' Artistic Advancement, Artists & Economic Development, Artists Engaging in Social Change, and Community Driven Design. Recent past grants in these areas ranged from $5,000 to $300,000.

Music Societies & Animal Rescue/Shelters

The Clark Charitable Trust provides grants to music societies for both children and adult groups, as well as to domestic and wild animal rescues and shelters. Grants range from $1,000 to $10,000. Computer Science Education Workshops

Google is accepting applications for funds from its CS4HS (Computer Science for High School) program, which is intended to promote the teaching of computer science and computational thinking in the high school and middle school curriculum. Grants of up to $15,000 will be given to support hands-on workshops to train K-12 teachers in how best to incorporate computer science into their curriculum. Applicants must be a college or university.

The Henry W. Bull Foundation provides grants to organizations involved in education and health. They are especially interested in supporting programs for at-risk children. National Projects to Empower Youth With Disabilities

The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation's National Grants program provides support for innovative model projects of national scope focused on the foundation's mission of helping youth with disabilities lead productive lives through increased employment. The program seeks to fund innovative projects that help youth with disabilities develop the leadership and employment skills they need to succeed, particularly for careers in science, technology, and the environment. Grant amounts range from $10,000 to $75,000 per year, for one to three years.

The Toyota U.S.A. Foundation is committed to improving the quality of K-12 education throughout the country by supporting innovative programs and building partnerships with organizations dedicated to improving the teaching and learning of mathematics, science, and environmental science. The Foundation places priority on programs that are broad in scope and incorporate systemic approaches, creative programs that develop the potential of students and/or teachers, and cost-effective programs that possess a high potential for success and relatively low duplication of effort. Past grants ranged from $100,000 to $3,000,000.
