Mount Airy Rails to Trails project
|
We are pleased to welcome the Town of Mount Airy into the Sustainable Maryland program. The town is the 9th of Frederick County's 11 municipalities to join our program, and part of the town is also in Carroll County. It's 9,300 residents keep the historic Main Street bustling, using the Shop Mount Airy App to see what specials are on locally, and making sure to visit the weekly farmers market that emphasizes the community's connection to the surrounding agricultural landscape. Volunteerism abounds, with beautification and recycling & sanitation commissions, a history and tourism society, and a vibrant Arts Alliance. A centerpiece of town is the Mount Airy Rails to Trails project, an orchestration of many individuals, organizations, businesses and government entities coming together to create a 2.5 mile walking/biking path connecting the outermost boundaries of town along the old B&O right of way.
According to James Stargel, chair of the Recycling & Sanitation Commission, speaking about the town's registration with Sustainable Maryland, "We're ready to go at this...It's exciting. I think we're going to do great things for Mount Airy." We couldn't agree more!

"Each food items in a typical U.S. meal has traveled an average of 1,500 miles....If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week."
