TWO FIRSTS! WELCOME ABOARD HAMPSTEAD AND OAKLAND

The Town of Hampstead is the first municipality in Carroll County to register with the Sustainable Maryland program! Hampstead is the home to a farmers market with two dozen vendors, an active business association, and was recently ranked the best place to raise kids in Maryland and the #2 best city in Maryland to achieve a work-life balance.

And...the Town of Oakland is the first municipality in Garrett County to register with SM! As the westernmost municipality in the state, Oakland is surrounded by the Allegheny Mountains and located close to the source of the Potomac River. Several miles of walking and bicycling paths connecting local parks to historic sites are enjoyed by residents and visitors. The town is a Tree City USA, boasts a twice-weekly downtown farmers market, and is home to four  Maryland Green Schools.

This brings the number of SM-registered or certified municipalities to 63. We're looking forward to working with our new Green Teams in Hampstead and Oakland

SUSTAINABLE BURKITTSVILLE'S NEW WEBSITE -- A MODEL FOR MARYLAND'S GREEN TEAMS

The new Sustainable Burkittsville website features information on current projects, a resident survey, upcoming events and more. This is an excellent model for Green Teams looking to connect with residents and create a community of sustainability-minded advocates at the local level. Contact Lisa Orr, Burkittsville's Green Team Chair, for more information.

Sustainable Maryland is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. It is a free and voluntary program designed to help Maryland communities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, and recognize their accomplishments. Our sponsors include the Town Creek Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maryland Municipal League. For more information about how your municipality can register in the Sustainable Maryland program, plus customized Green Team training and access to student resources that are available to provide consultancy services for municipal planning, please contact 301 405-7956 or mikeh75@umd.edu
