WELCOME ABOARD DENTON AND WALKERSVILLE
We are pleased to welcome our 59th and 60th registered municipalities to the Sustainable Maryland program.

Denton Community Garden
The Town of Denton is the county seat of Caroline County and is our third municipality in the County to join the program. Located along the Choptank River, Denton is home to Summerfest, an annual celebration in the historic downtown. Martinak and Tuckahoe State Parks offer many hiking trails, canoe launches, fishing spots and seasonal events, and five smaller municipal parks provide additional recreational opportunities for residents. The Downtown Denton Farmers Market and "Third Thursdays" events draw locals and visitors alike to Denton's historic Main Street, and the Denton Community Garden is located right next to Town Hall. Clean renewable energy from a recently installed 519-kilowatt solar project power will be used by Denton to offset a portion of its electric utility's electricity consumption.

The Town of Walkersville is our eighth municipality in Frederick County to join the Sustainable Maryland program. A community food bank operates in the Town Hall, where residents can also drop off bulk recyclable items twice each month. Four municipal parks offer residents a variety of recreation opportunities, including Walkersville Community Park, which features a walking and fitness trail. Celebrating the area's local historic railroad heritage, the nearby Walkersville Southern Railroad offers scenic train rides in the nearby historic Monacacy Valley.

We're looking forward to working with our new Green Teams in Denton and Walkersville!

MARYLAND SCORES A GRADE OF "B+" ON NATIONAL CLIMATE PREPAREDNESS SCORECARD

Maryland scores an overall grade of B+ on its annual Climate Preparedness Report Card, with grades of an A- for coastal flooding and an A for extreme heat. The grades are relative to other states, and relative to the magnitude of the climate threats themselves. Maryland is one of only a few states that have taken strong action to plan for both their current and future climate risks. This annual report is prepared by Climate Central, an independent organization of leading scientists and journalists researching and reporting on our changing climate and its impact on the American public.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Sustainable Maryland staff wish you and yours a very happy and healthy holiday season and New Year!

Sustainable Maryland is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. It is a free and voluntary program designed to help Maryland communities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, and recognize their accomplishments. Our sponsors include the Town Creek Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maryland Municipal League. For more information about how your municipality can register in the Sustainable Maryland program, plus customized Green Team training and access to student resources that are available to provide consultancy services for municipal planning, please contact 301 405-7956 or mikeh75@umd.edu
