WELCOME ABOARD LEONARDTOWN!
We are pleased to welcome the Town of Leonardtown to the Sustainable Maryland program! A community of 2,900 and the county seat of St. Mary's County, Leonardtown has recently undergone a renaissance in its historic downtown, with new shops and restaurants attracting visitors from across the region.  The transformation of the Leonardtown Wharf into a public park, including a canoe launch, water trail and forest preserve for hiking and bird-watching, has been a signature project. An annual Earth Day Celebration offers demonstrations and exhibits on organic gardening, recycling, reducing energy use and healthy living. Efforts are afoot to make the town more walkable and bikeable with new sidewalks and bike lanes. And the local farmers market and First Friday events like the Art Walk animate the newly designated Arts & Entertainment District throughout the year.

We look forward to working with Leonardtown!

COOL TOOL: USGS TOPO-VIEW HISTORICAL TOPOGRAPHIC MAPS OF MARYLAND FROM 1940s-2000s
Baltimore region topo map, 1948
The United State Geological Survey recently launched Topo-VIEW, a new service that allows users to easily search for and download any of the agency's 180,000 topographic maps. Color-coded boxes overlaid on a map of the US and a time slider allows users to scan for maps in a specific state and a specific time period. Maps can be downloaded for free in JPEG, GeoTIFF and KML (Google Earth) formats. Maryland regions have maps from the 1940s and each following decade. Green teams can use this tool to observe development patterns in their communities over the years, loss of wetlands and forests, waterways that have changed or been covered over, and more.

QUOTE

"By all these lovely tokens September days are here,
With summer's best of weather And autumn's best of cheer."

--Helen Hunt Jackson, American poet, writer and activist

Sustainable Maryland is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. It is a free and voluntary program designed to help Maryland communities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, and recognize their accomplishments. Our sponsors include the Town Creek Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maryland Municipal League. For more information about how your municipality can register in the Sustainable Maryland program, plus customized Green Team training and access to student resources that are available to provide consultancy services for municipal planning, please contact 301 405-7956 or mikeh75@umd.edu
