TALKING "SMALL TOWN SUSTAINABILITY" AT THE MARYLAND MUNICIPAL LEAGUE CONVENTION IN OCEAN CITY
SM staffer Brandy Espinola and our Chesapeake Conservation Corps volunteer Nick Ryugo hosted the Sustainable Maryland exhibit at the MML Summer Convention

Nearly 100 people attended our "Small Town Sustainability" session on the first day of the Maryland Municipal League's Summer Convention in Ocean City last week. We heard about solar projects in Bladensburg, Poolesville and Emmitsburg; composting programs in Frostburg; corrugated plastic recycling in Cumberland; and food forests in Burkittsville, amongst other exciting projects. Here's a link to our presentation, which we will expanding into a webinar later this year.

At our exhibit booth on Main Street, we also connected with lots of folks from certified communities (like Mount Rainier, who featured us on the cool lunchbox above) and met many newly elected officials, like 19-year-old Mayor of Indian Head, Brandon Paulin, who expressed interest in seeing his town get certified. It was a pleasure to chat with so many folks who were excited about sharing their sustainability success stories, as well as big plans for the future!

COOL INFOGRAPHIC: THE ROLE OF PUBLIC WORKS IN CREATING SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
Check out this infographic for the surprisingly varied ways that a community's Public Works Department can contribute to creating a more sustainable town or city. Infographics are also a great way for Green Teams to communicate project results and achievements within a community. An easy (and free) way to get started is to use the online program Piktochart.

WELCOME ABOARD: OCEAN CITY
City Hall, Ocean City
The coastal resort community of Ocean City recently registered with Sustainable Maryland. With a population that swells from 8,000 to over 300,000 on some summer weekends (making it the second largest city in Maryland at times), this town boasts more than just great waves and a famous boardwalk. Ocean City features several farmers' markets; is a designated  Tree City USA; has performed energy audits on its municipal buildings; and offers subsidized rain barrels to residents. We look forward to working with Ocean City!

Sustainable Maryland is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. It is a free and voluntary program designed to help Maryland communities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, and recognize their accomplishments. Our sponsors include the Town Creek Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maryland Municipal League.
