SUSTAINABLE MARYLAND VISITS HISTORIC BURKITTSVILLE FOR SMALL TOWN GREEN TEAM TRAINING
Burkittsville Green Team

Sustainable Maryland staff met with the newly-formed Burkittsville Green Team in April to provide them with training on the program. This historic town of 151 residents, located along the Appalachian Trail (AT) and site of a Civil War battle at nearby Crampton's Gap, has the feeling of stepping back in time, with its Main Street of well-preserved 19th century buildings and necklace of preserved farmland and scenic viewsheds.

The Green Team is focusing on several projects in its first year, including, as one might expect from a rural community, those that focus on food and watershed protection. Their Action Plan includes creating a food forest (an example in Greenbelt), holding food preservation classes, creating an online sustainability resource center, and fostering residential energy efficiency amongst the town's residents. Future projects may include a Green Street (an example in Cambridge) to more effectively slow down and filter stormwater run-off, as well as a septic system assessment and inventory, including the possibility of an innovative bulk purchase septic pump-out initiative.

The surrounding rolling farmland and foothills are home to the first licensed cider distillery in the state (which uses American heritage apples, many of which have almost been forgotten), as well as the War Correspondents Memorial Arch, which serves as a gateway to the AT. For a small town, Burkittsville has big plans. We can't wait to get back for a visit, and look forward to certifying their efforts in coming years!

FREDERICK COUNTY GREEN TEAM SUMMIT: A SUCCESSFUL KNOWLEDGE-SHARING EVENT
Antonette Vasseur, City of Brunswick's Green Team Chair, reporting out

More than 30 people turned out for our first Frederick County Green Team Summit on March 25. In addition to our hosts, the City of Frederick, we were joined by Green Team members from Brunswick, Burkittsville, Emmitsburg, Middletown. In addition, we had residents and staff from Thurmont and Utica in attendance. Resource providers from the following agencies and organizations gave presentations and participated in a "speed-dating for sustainability" session, where potential Green Team projects were matched up with providers' technical assistance and funding resources:
  • Monacacy & Catoctin Watershed Alliance
Ann Li, Groundswell
Cindy Unangst, Town of Middletown

COOL ONLINE TOOL: I-TREE INVENTORY
Check out i-Tree Tools, a free online software package that allows communities to complete a tree canopy inventory. This tool can help SM-registered municipalities satisfy part of the requirements for Tree City USA Action, or simply an innovative demonstration project in the Natural Resources category.

WELCOME ABOARD: TOWN OF OXFORD
The Town of Oxford (Talbot County) recently registered with Sustainable Maryland. Sustainable Maryland is an initiative of the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. It is a free and voluntary program designed to help Maryland communities choose a direction for their sustainability efforts, improve access to resources needed to implement action, and recognize their accomplishments. Our sponsors include the Town Creek Foundation, US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maryland Municipal League. For more information about how your municipality can register in the Sustainable Maryland program, plus customized Green Team training and access to student resources that are available to provide consultancy services for municipal planning, please contact 301 405-7956 or mikeh75@umd.edu
