MEET OUR NEW EFC STAFF MEMBERS
|
The Environmental Finance Center is pleased to welcome two new staff members to our team! Andy Fellows came to the Environmental Finance Center after decades of experience in non-profit advocacy and local government. Andy worked as the Chesapeake Regional Director for Clean Water Action from 1999 to 2014. He coordinated national, regional, state and local campaigns to improve and protect water quality, environmental health and justice, and to make democracy work in Maryland, Virginia, the District of Columbia and Delaware. Andy has over 30 years of grassroots organizing, lobbying, electoral, media, development, and management experience. Andy has also been College Park's Mayor since 2009. He previously represented the 3rd District on the City Council from 2001-2007, and has served on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's Board of Directors, the Transportation Planning Board and Chesapeake Bay and Water Resources Policy Committee, and by appointment of the Governor on the Maryland Commission on Environmental Justice and Sustainable Communities. Jenny Pascaran Beard joined the Environmental Finance Center in 2015 as the Communications Manager. She oversees all strategic communication, outreach and marketing efforts, including managing the EFC's social media and online presence. Before joining the EFC, she was a television producer for nearly 15 years, telling stories and creating content for a variety of audiences and networks. She began her professional career in public affairs at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Smithsonian Institution. Jenny received her B.A. in Journalism/Public Relations from the University of Maryland.

FIRST CITY-TO-CITY, BAY-TO-BAY MENTORING EXCHANGE PAIRS NEWPORT, RI AND ANNAPOLIS, MD
|
| Attendees toured a state-of-the-art water treatment plant in Newport, RI |
On April 13 and 14, EFC hosted a workshop series in Rhode Island that linked communities within two estuaries: the Chesapeake Bay and the Narragansett Bay in New England. The workshops provided leaders from each region with an opportunity to share experiences, identify unique approaches for addressing water infrastructure needs, and plan a path forward by working more closely together. The events focused on linking federal, state and local leaders with funders and private sector entities, to identify innovative ways to effectively manage and pay for the dual challenges of stormwater runoff and the impacts of climate change. As part of these workshops, EFC also brought together elected officials and their staff from the cities of Annapolis, MD and Newport, RI as part of EFC's pilot mentoring project that links similar cities in different regions who can build partnerships, programs, and share ideas and resources. Annapolis and Newport began plans for working together to become model climate resilient cities that would include energy, water infrastructure, and green infrastructure. A follow up workshop series is planned for May being hosted by the City of Annapolis.

LONG-TERM FLOOD RESILIENCY PLANNING BRINGS EFC TO UPSTATE NEW YORK

Roundtable discussions, Ithaca
|
On April 16, the EFC teamed with our partners at the Syracuse EFC and Cornell Cooperative Extension to offer a workshop on Long-Term Flood Resiliency in Ithaca, New York. Given the regional trend toward more frequent and intense rain events that result in recurring flooding and erosion issues for communities, as well as an increased financial burden to municipal budgets, the workshop was designed to help communities prepare for these risks and plan for investments in hazard mitigation. Close to 100 municipal officials, highway personnel, planners, and engaged community members participated in the event. Most notably, Finger Lakes Economic Development Center CEO Steve Griffin discussed a severe flooding event that occurred in Penn Yan Village last year, including lessons learned and strategies for moving forward. Sessions also focused on a green infrastructure approach to asset management and managing stormwater. Roundtable discussions enabled peer-to-peer exchange on local challenges, flooding stories, and goals. For more information contact Jennifer Cotting at jcotting@umd.edu

Community meeting, St. Michael's
|
With support from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, EFC will be developing a community-supported plan for improving stormwater and nuisance flooding in the Town of St. Michaels, Maryland. Along with project partners from the Town of St. Michaels, the Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, the Maryland Critical Area Commission, and Maryland's Watershed Restoration Specialists, EFC is currently holding community meetings in St. Michaels to better gauge the problem at hand and attitudes towards potential solutions. Over the course of the next several months EFC and project partners will work to deliver specific technical and financing recommendations to help residents, businesses, and the Town of St. Michaels better manage water quality and quantity. For more on EFC's recent work in St. Michael's, check out this article in the Star-Democrat. For more information contact Sean Williamson at srw46@umd.edu
