Coho Restaurant Newsletter March 2013

After a short respite in January, we kicked off the 2013 season continuing on our Global Cuisine itinerary. We have been eating our way around the world since November, sampling flavors and textures from culinary meccas near and far. On opening night we stopped in Japan, and I am still hearing raves about the hamachi. Last week during German night, several guests mentioned that dinner brought back memories of their childhood; they said they could picture themselves sitting around grandmother's dining table. Of course, they thought Chef Bill's version was better. We promise not to tell Grandma. Chef Bill has had fun researching various cultures, trying new cooking techniques and equipping his kitchen with interesting ingredients and spices. There's a whole new world of food awaiting you this spring, and we hope you can travel with us each Wednesday! Next on our itinerary is Brazil, Greece and Africa, and the best part - no jet lag!
For the remainder of the week, we will present our standard Pacific Northwest Cuisine along with our Chef's Tasting menu. Chef Bill has some special dinners planned including a Russian dinner featuring hand crafted micro-distilled vodkas in March and a wine dinner with 'the girls' from Bergevin Lane Vineyards in June.
Speaking of travel, when we returned from holiday, we noticed lots of changes in our little neighborhood. It harkened back to a conversation I had a few years ago, with a couple visiting from Berkeley, California. As we chatted tableside, they mentioned that Nichols Street reminded them of the Gourmet Ghetto in North Berkeley. It seemed like quite a stretch to me at that time. But this spring, things looked different. Brickworks is completing an extensive renovation and will open this summer and our new neighbors across the street, the Maker and the Monger Cheese Shop will open this spring. So I guess we are definitely growing into a mini 'Gourmet Ghetto.'

Brickworks - Our Neighbors to The Left
As Coho opened its doors in the spring of 2008, the farming community was very intrigued with the dilapidated building used for construction storage next door. Now some 5 years later, the Town's first industrial building is going to be restored to its former glory.
This eyesore of a building dating back to 1890 is the last industrial building remaining in Friday Harbor. Learn more

The Maker and The Monger Cheese Shop
We have new neighbors across the street, the Maker and the Monger, Speciality Cheese Shop opening this spring. This full service retail store and cafe will feature artisan cheese and wine makers from the Pacific Northwest. They will also offer tasty bits and small plates.
Richard and Sherri Daly have been enjoying their vacation home on San Juan Island for the last 8 years and decided to move here full time. Learn more...

Crystal Cove & Coho
|
Last week I got several emails telling me that Coho was famous. I am not sure this really qualifies as being famous, but here is how the story goes: New York Times bestselling author, Lisa Kleypas' latest book, Crystal Cove, is set in Friday Harbor. The main character, Justine Hoffman, has made a comfortable life for herself as the proprietor of a successful boutique hotel in town. What Justine soon discovers is that someone cast a spell on her when she was born, so that she will never find her soul mate. Learn more...

Wine Picks
| |
After our short winter break, going back into the cellar is like getting reacquainted with old friends. Here are a few wines that are drinking particularly well and sometimes get overlooked, so we thought they deserved a highlight in our newsletter. Plan a dinner party serving all three. Pair the Rhone blend with seafood, poultry or pork, the syrah with a grilled meat or rich braised lamb dish, and the sherry with a cheese plate.

Recipe of the Month
|
Nothing says comfort food like pizza. This photo is making all of us hungry for pizza. Chef Bill has fun doing upscale twists on old favorites. The pizza del giorno changes daily but always has house made mozzarella and, depending on his whimsy, sausage from Jones Family Farms, house cured duck prosciutto or some fresh pesto.
