Amid a thaw in U.S.-Cuba relations, the University of Florida's Lillian Guerra discusses her book and her take on the long authoritarian rule of Fidel Castro - a citizen-abided "grassroots dictatorship" that still shapes Cuban life today.

From Cowtown to Paris of the Plains: Kansas City Composers - Thomas Aber, Greg Briggs, Mark Cohick, Pat Alonzo Conway
In a special presentation, the quartet Ninkasi performs 10 musical pieces composed and published in Kansas City between 1895 and 1925, when the city grew into a manufacturing and commercial hub - and cultural destination. Introducing: ragtime and jazz.

Mad Science of Greater Kansas City activates an interactive Rube Goldberg machine - an over-complicated contraption that uses a chain reaction to accomplish a very simple task. In this case, it's to get you to open a book. Appropriate for all ages.

Jane Austen and the State of the Nation - Sheryl Craig
In a presentation based on her book, author Sheryl Craig explores Jane Austen's references to politics and political economics and concludes that the author was a liberal Tory who remained consistent in her political agenda throughout her career as a novelist.

The Library screens five films in July that not only reached summer blockbuster status - totaling nearly $1.3 billion in domestic ticket sales - but also rank among the all-time best big-screen offerings of the season, according to critics.

Second Time Around: The Hubcap as Art
Artists across the world were invited by Landfillart, Inc., a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit, to transform hundreds of discarded hubcaps into fine art. More than a thousand responded, and 35 of the best works make up this unique, thought-provoking traveling exhibit.

Republican Showdown in Kansas City
Staged in partnership with the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas, this exhibit features photographs, video, and other artifacts from the nation's last contested political convention - the 1976 Republican National Convention held in Kansas City.
