Brian L. Steed, a military historian at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and specialist on the Middle East, examines the makeup, motivations, and operations of the violent Islamic State (or ISIS).

Acclaimed Harvard University scholar and author Leo Damrosch examines the iconic but enigmatic poet, engraver, artist, and 18th-century visionary William Blake in a discussion of his new book.

Desegregating the Swope Park Swimming Pool - Thurgood Marshall Jr., Alvin Brooks, Steve Kraske

Please Note: Auditorium seating for this event is now closed, but overflow seating where the event will be shown via closed circuit television is still available. The discussion will also stream live at youtube.com/kclibrary.

Thurgood Marshall Jr., son of the Supreme Court justice who argued as a young lawyer for desegregation of the Swope Park pool, joins a discussion of the 1951 case that put Kansas City at the forefront of the civil rights movement.

Area high school students lend their own interpretations of Shakespeare's works as they compete in this annual event sponsored by the Kansas City Branch of the English-Speaking Union. At stake: a berth in the national competition in New York.

In conjunction with A Winter's Tale Spin, the theme of its Shakespeare-centered Adult Winter Reading Program, the Library screens films spotlighting the Bard's life and works.

Frozen in Time: Images of Wounded Knee and Pine Ridge, 1890-91
More than 60 photos - drawn in part from the Library of Congress, Denver Public Library, Nebraska State Historical Society, and the Library's Missouri Valley Special Collections - shine a light on the controversial Wounded Knee massacre 125 years ago.
