In a discussion of his new book This Is Not Dixie: Racist Violence in Kansas, 1861-1927, author Brent M.S. Campney illustrates that racial violence in the decades following the Civil War was hardly limited to the South.

More than 60 photos - drawn in part from the Library of Congress, Denver Public Library, Nebraska State Historical Society, and the Library's Missouri Valley Special Collections - shine a light on the controversial Wounded Knee massacre 125 years ago.
