This has been a busy summer for early learning in Pottstown. Rather than lazy, hazy days, we were busy recruiting and enrolling children in the new state funded summer kindergarten transition classes; planning professional development opportunities for our community teachers and discussing new ways to reach out to families. We hope you had time to relax this summer and are refreshed as we start a new school year. Have a great school year!
Summer Readiness Classes
77 Children Attend Classes to Prepare for Kindergarten
The PEAK Pre-K Counts Partnership was funded by the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL) for six two-week Summer Kindergarten Readiness Program classes. This is a new initiative from OCDEL and Pottstown was one of the few partnerships around the state to receive the summer funding.
The PEAK summer classes focused on early literacy skills and social/emotional development. While some of the students had attended Pre-K Counts or the school district Pre-K program previously, 35% of the students had not participated in any type of an early learning program.
The summer classes gave all of the students an extra boost just prior to starting in kindergarten. One of the parents commented, "Our daughter has gained and grown so much in so many ways through the PEAK program as well as the Summer Kindergarten Readiness Program. She will have a great year in kindergarten!"

PEAK Awarded Target Foundation Grant
PEAK Strengthening Families
The PEAK initiative was awarded a grant from the Target Foundation to support the PEAK Strengthening Families strategy. The grant will support the purchase of children's books and literacy related supplies for parent/child workshops and take-home activities. This is the third Target grant that PEAK has received. We appreciate the support of Target in supporting early literacy.
