Board Report

This month, we welcome to the SCRAP Board, Diego Castellani, UCSF nurse and Green team participant, Bayview community member and activist, and active volunteer at Friends of the Urban Forest and SCRAP. Here's a note from Diego:

I have been coming to SCRAP for at least five or six years and is always pleased to find some 'treasure' to take home. SCRAP has been my favorite resource landmark and place of inspiration in the creation of art pieces for the UCSF art exhibitions. Recently I decided to join the dynamic Board of SCRAP because I believe in repurposing and offering art materials and supplies at an affordable price. This past month, I volunteered at the Hats off to Teachers event and was amazed to see all those material diverted from landfill into classrooms. Seeing SCRAP's impact made me feel so happy and proud to be joining the board.

Dear  ,

August was a busy month here at SCRAP. We kicked off our new donation and pricing policies, we said Farewell to our Program Coordinator, Jenny, we attended several exciting events throughout the city, including our new partnership with Urban Air Market, and we had a record breaking Teacher Giveaway. Our Hats Off to Teachers event hosted 314 educators gathering over 6000 pounds of free classroom materials, impacting 14,500 students. A big thank you to everyone who has donated materials and money, helped us spread the word, and especially the staff, volunteers and board members who helped make this happen.

Looking at the rest of the year, I am so delighted to tell you about all the great workshops and programs we have planned. Tomorrow, 9/5, we'll be partnering with Art Is Moving to bring Art Break Day at Justin Herman Plaza. We're honored to be the beneficiary of San Francisco Sustainable Fashion Week. SCRAP will also be out at many other upcoming community events, including farmers' markets, Nightlifes, Sunday Streets and Roadworks at Center for the Book.

Here at SCRAP, our upcoming workshops include Mosaic Mandalas, Photobooks, Iris Fold, Collage and Greeting Cards and of course, SCRAP Wrap. We're also featuring several new events: Bagshare Sew-ins, Sewing Machine Clinic and a drop-in Terrarium workshop. Sign up for these and more at our website.

This Saturday, we'll be hosting another Teacher Materials Giveaway for San Francisco Educators. And if you are an educator, please come and also check out our great line up of Workshops for Educators. Upcoming workshops include Dioramas, Printmaking, and Papermaking.

Looking forward to seeing you at an upcoming SCRAP event, workshop, giveaway or shopping at our warehouse.

SCRAP Workshop -

Mosaic Mandalas w/ Jane Schafgans

Saturday, Sept 13th  10am - 4pm

Sunday, Sept 14th   11am - 1pm     fee: $80

Mandalas are everywhere. "The circle with a center" pattern is a basic structure of creation that is reflected in much of the natural world, and recognized for it's spiritual meaning and representation of wholeness. In this workshop Jane will lead participants in an exploration and creation of the mandala pattern in mosaics using a variety of ceramic and glass tile, and other personal items such as jewelry. For some this may be the first time working with making a mosaic, for others, it is an opportunity to try out some new ideas and gain more experience working in this wonderful medium. Participants are welcome to bring personal materials to include in their mandalas, and will be given a chance to treasure hunt in SCRAP for inspiration as well. On Saturday Jane will go over techniques and uses of materials as participants create their mosaic mandalas. Sunday the mosaics will be grouted and finished.
