Board Report
|
SCRAP has a very vibrant community outreach program; at these events, we bring our creative reuse mission to the community. It's amazing to see adults and children explore their creative sides. At this year's Maker Faire in San Mateo the SCRAP tent was one of the most popular places to be. Over 225 families made Space Ships and Creatures from SCRAP items. Last month SCRAP and Mo'Magic joined forces to bring the SCRAP experience to inner city youth at Mo'Magic's summer programs. It was a joy to watch children dance to their self-made maracas. The SCRAP creative reuse tables are not limited to youth events. In June we were at the California Academy of Sciences for Pride Nightlife. I've had a lot of fun joining the SCRAP team at these recent outreach events and hope that you can join us at an event soon.

SCRAP's mission is to stimulate creativity and
environmental awareness in children and adults through promoting the creative reuse of materials that traditionally have been discarded as waste.

July is a month of change here at SCRAP.
Our Program Coordinator, Jenny Morningstar, will be leaving us soon for graduate school, so we are looking for someone to take over all our programs. In addition, we're hiring for more Creative Reuse Specialists to help us sort through the 2000 pounds of materials that we get donated every day. We will also be sending out a job call later this month for a new position, Business Outreach Coordinator, funded by a grant from the Altamont Education Advisory Board. Keep your eyes on our website and Facebook if you are interested in joining the SCRAP team.
In addition to the personnel changes, our board and staff are working on ideas to improve the SCRAP warehouse, our programs and more. One big change is our Hats Off to Teachers Celebration and Materials Giveaway. Last year, we had almost 200 educators from all over the Bay Area attend. To make our giveaway this year faster and less stressful, we will be hosting our Hats Off to Teachers on a Sunday (Aug 10th), complete with educator specials throughout the warehouse, project demonstrations and more! This will be the first time that we open just for educators and we are hoping for a huge turnout, so please help us spread the word about the event!
What will never change is our dedication to creative reuse art education. We're hosting two events at our SCRAP Art exhibition: a hands-on family day at the Reclaimed Room at Building Resources on July 19th, and a workshop with glass artist Reddy Lieb at Public Glass on July 26th for our closing reception. And don't forget the Mixed Media Assemblage workshop with Reddy two week before that, on July 12th at SCRAP. Reddy's classes are always filled with creativity, technique and intentionality and this one should be really fun.
Looking forward to growing and changing SCRAP for the better,
Shuai Chen
SCRAP Executive Director

Spotlight on Jenny Morningstar, SCRAP Program Coordinator
| Jenny has been working at SCRAP in various capacities since 2007: Warehouse staff, Admin Assistant, Exhibition Coordinator and Program Coordinator. During her time at SCRAP, she has spearheaded the last four of SCRAP's art exhibitions, coordinated and worked with artists to bring high quality workshops to SCRAP, developed and implemented several programs, helped design and implement our website and newsletters, created systems and structures out of chaos and much, much more. Jenny is the kind of person who throws her heart and soul into whatever she does and her dedication to SCRAP is unparalleled. She will be leaving in August to attend graduate school in Exhibition Design at the Corcoran School of Art + Design. We'll miss her dearly here at SCRAP, but we are so proud and elated that she is following her dreams.
