Greetings!
March at SCRAP brings several ways to be inspired! Our tempered glass mosaics class is already filled, but sign up for the wait list or take our Zippity Do Dahs! zipper accessories workshop and drop in for our jewelry making Mondays. SCRAP has been invited by FLAX to display artwork by SCRAP staff, volunteers and supporters in their store kiosks. See some amazing student artwork at the SFUSD Arts festival at the Asian Art Museum, open now until March 10th: many of the pieces include SCRAP materials. Zero Waste Week is happening in the third week of March, and I will be giving a talk about SCRAP and creative reuse to many of the world's young movers and shakers in the environmental movement. Hopefully, I'll inspire them to creatively rethink the materials they would have discarded. If you love SCRAP and want to help us inspire more people in the community, please consider joining our board. We're having a board recruitment meeting on Saturday, March 23rd at 3pm at SCRAP. Please RSVP to boardinfo@scrap-sf.org if you are planning on attending. Hope your March is filled with creativity and inspiration, Shuai Chen

SCRAP Workshop
|
Saturday, Mar 9th 10am - 4pm
Sunday, Mar 10th 10am - 1pm
Join us for artist Reddy Lieb's first weekend workshop at SCRAP! Her tempered glass mosaics glitter magically as they refract light giving a glimpse of fanciful veiled collages underneath. Reddy will show participants how to transform small eye-catching pieces of broken glass into beautiful mosaics. Come learn how to work with this magical material and create a recycled mixed media piece. Participants will work with collage materials found at SCRAP and adhere them to a piece of wood, a box or other 3D form. Then, you will cover the collage with tempered glass. The second day of class the mosaics will be finished with colored grouts to enhance the design.
About Reddy
For over 30 years Reddy Lieb has been working with glass to create both conceptual and functional work. She uses recycled materials in her work and in 2000 was the Artist-in-Residence at Recology San Francisco, aka the garbage dump. In 2004, she received an MFA from the California College of Art. Reddy loves inspiring the creative process in people and has been doing so for over 20 years.

Sunday, April 14th 11am - 1pm fee: $80
Mandalas are everywhere. "The circle with a center" pattern is a basic structure of creation that is reflected in much of the natural world, and recognized for it's spiritual meaning of wholeness. In this workshop Jane will lead participants in an exploration of the mandala pattern in mosaics using a variety of ceramic and glass tile, and other personal items such as jewelry. For some this may be the first time making a mosaic, for others, it is an opportunity to try out some new ideas and gain more experience working in this wonderful medium. Participants are invited to bring personal materials to include in their mandalas, and will be given a chance to treasure hunt in SCRAP for inspiration as well. On Saturday Jane will go over techniques and uses of materials as participants create their mosaic mandalas. Sunday the mosaics will be grouted and finished.
About Jane
Jane Schafgans, native San Franciscan, has been working with mosaics for many years. Besides teaching adults, she has also worked as an artist in residence, partnering with fellow artist Kim Payne, in several public and private schools in S.F, facilitating mosaic murals designed and created by students. She has also volunteered on several public works mosaic installations around the city.
