Board Report
With Spring approaching I think about how SCRAP inspires artists, teachers and DIY folks of all stripes with every-day objects from glass block to framed artwork to carpet squares.

As SCRAP board VP for governance, I'm happy to report that our Board of Directors continues to grow and mature under the leadership of Board President Dianne Platner. We've succeeded in recruiting talented and committed new volunteer board members over the past 24 months.  Click here for brief profiles of three new SCRAP board members:

March at SCRAP brings several ways to be inspired!

Our tempered glass mosaics class is already filled, but sign up for the wait list or take our Zippity Do Dahs! zipper accessories workshop and drop in for our jewelry making Mondays. SCRAP has been invited by FLAX to display artwork by SCRAP staff, volunteers and supporters in their store kiosks. See some amazing student artwork at the SFUSD Arts festival at the Asian Art Museum, open now until March 10th: many of the pieces include SCRAP materials.

Zero Waste Week is happening in the third week of March, and I will be giving a talk about SCRAP and creative reuse to many of the world's young movers and shakers in the environmental movement. Hopefully, I'll inspire them to creatively rethink the materials they would have discarded.

If you love SCRAP and want to help us inspire more people in the community, please consider joining our board. We're having a board recruitment meeting on Saturday, March 23rd at 3pm at SCRAP. Please RSVP to if you are planning on attending.

Hope your March is filled with creativity and inspiration,

Shuai Chen

SCRAP Workshop

Saturday, Mar 9th 10am - 4pm

Sunday, Mar 10th 10am - 1pm

fee: $80

Join us for artist Reddy Lieb's first weekend workshop at SCRAP! Her tempered glass mosaics glitter magically as they refract light giving a glimpse of fanciful veiled collages underneath. Reddy will show participants how to transform small eye-catching pieces of broken glass into beautiful mosaics. Come learn how to work with this magical material and create a recycled mixed media piece. Participants will work with  collage materials found at SCRAP and adhere them to a piece of wood, a box or other 3D form. Then, you will cover the collage with tempered glass. The second day of class the mosaics will be finished with colored grouts to enhance the design.

About Reddy

For over 30 years Reddy Lieb has been working with glass to create both conceptual and functional work. She uses recycled materials in her work and in 2000 was the Artist-in-Residence at Recology San Francisco, aka the garbage dump. In 2004, she received an MFA from the California College of Art. Reddy loves inspiring the creative process in people and has been doing so for over 20 years.

SCRAP Workshop -
Zippity Do Dahs! w/ Dorothy Yuki
Saturday, March 16th  1-4pm    fee: $40

Join us for our second installment of Zip it Up!
Dorothy Yuki dazzles us once again with a myriad of techniques to make zipper embellishments that can adorn clothing and more. Participants can bring in their own zippers or dive into SCRAP's zipper trove! Dorothy will also teach some fabric flower-making techniques. She will be using cross weave polyester taffeta and other swatches found at SCRAP. Sign up early because Dorothy's classes fill up fast!

About Dorothy
Dorothy Yuki has been a design and production consultant to the fashion industry and designed and made home and gift products for her own business, In Good Company. Since selling her company, she's had a private label line for Macy's USA and was a special project designer for identity companies. SCRAP Workshop -
Mosaic Mandalas w/ Jane Schafgans

Saturday, April 13th   10am - 4pm

Sunday, April 14th   11am - 1pm     fee: $80

Mandalas are everywhere. "The circle with a center" pattern is a basic structure of creation that is reflected in much of the natural world, and recognized for it's spiritual meaning of wholeness. In this workshop Jane will lead participants in an exploration of the mandala pattern in mosaics using a variety of ceramic and glass tile, and other personal items such as jewelry. For some this may be the first time making a mosaic, for others, it is an opportunity to try out some new ideas and gain more experience working in this wonderful medium. Participants are invited to bring personal materials to include in their mandalas, and will be given a chance to treasure hunt in SCRAP for inspiration as well. On Saturday Jane will go over techniques and uses of materials as participants create their mosaic mandalas. Sunday the mosaics will be grouted and finished.

About Jane

Jane Schafgans, native San Franciscan, has been working with mosaics for many years. Besides teaching adults, she has also worked as an artist in residence, partnering with fellow artist Kim Payne, in several public and private schools in S.F, facilitating mosaic murals designed and created by students. She has also volunteered on several public works mosaic installations around the city.

SCRAP Workshop -
Artist Aprons w/ Amelia Strader

Saturday, April 27th 10am - 4pm   fee: $60

Join Amelia Strader as she shows participants how to make an  Artists Apron. This quick and easy design is made from just one yard of fabric and can be customized with stamps made from buttons! Bring your own fabric or dive into SCRAP's incredible collection of fabrics, trims, and buttons to find materials to create an apron that reflects your personality and interests. Participants will cut out a pattern, finish a seam with bias tape, top stitch pockets, and create

decorative stamps from buttons. Amelia provides patterns for S, M, and L. Please bring a sewing machine. This is not a beginners class, participants need to be experienced sew-ers.

About Amelia
Amelia Strader has 20+ years of sewing experience under her handmade belt. She grew up surrounded by art supplies, fabric, and yarn. She got her BFA in Fashion Design from the Massachusetts College of Art & Design and worked as a technical designer in the garment industry. Amelia is head crafter and owner of local mobile crafting workshop, GoGo Craft. Amelia's main goal is for her students to feel inspired by what they learn, and to keep creating after they leave class.

SCRAPpy Workshop -
Creative Collage w/ Roxanna Walker
Saturday, May 11th 1-4pm     fee: $30

Celebrate your innate creativity with an afternoon of collage led by local mixed media artist Roxanna Walker. Collage as we know it surfaced 100 years ago with modern masters

Braque and Picasso. Despite that impressive start it is an excellent medium for those who yearn to create but have no formal background in art. Collage is a no-pressure technique with no mistakes! Participants will delve into SCRAP for images and other elements that inspire and speak to them. And go home with at least one collage and lots of inspiration for your next visit to SCRAP!

SCRAP Workshop -
Art Journaling w/ Jennifer Mantle
Saturday, May 18th 1-4pm     fee: $40

Join instructor Jennifer Mantle and get started on your own personal art journal in a fun and playful environment. Jennifer will offer inspiration, tips and techniques that even experienced art journalers will enjoy. The process is the product in art journaling, so "permission" will be the word of the day! Participants will use rubber stamping, paints,
stencils, collage, found  objects,
natural objects, and just about anything else you can find at SCRAP (or bring from home!). You don't have to be an artist or a writer to art journal. The only requirements are a willingness to experiment, play, and possibly get messy.

About Jennifer

Jennifer Mantle has been teaching transformative workshops since her teens, and using art to enliven the process in soulful playshops for the last 5 years. See more of her art and approach at
