OCTOBER 2013

Dear Safety Officers, Commanders, and Deputy CCs,

Where did Summer GO? -
Well Summer ended officially on Sept 22 at 4:44 PM. So now is the time to start preparing for Fall activities and possible safety problems from less daylight and falling leaves and yes that possibility of a snow. Time to seal up any holes you have in buildings to keep out the cold and creatures that want a warmer spot to stay over the coming winter. Also the amount of daylight is decreasing daily, so as you drive more darkness will greet you along with the Sun rising or setting in front of you. With all the glare and blindness associated with that situation. Compounded with a windshield that needs to be cleaned both inside and out. Fall also brings the beautiful and colorful leaves that adorn our trees. Problem is that they end up falling onto the sidewalks and highways. Leaves become very slippery and even more so when wet so use extra caution when walking and driving on them.

And now that 4-letter word that strikes fear in the hearts of drivers and cheer to the school kids with the hope of a snow day. Now is the time to get your vehicles ready for the colder and wetter times ahead. Around October or November you may want to get your vehicles winterized. A number of garages and car dealers offer winterization packages at reduced prices. Might be a good idea to think about it.

Safety Teleconference -

The next Safety Teleconference for Pa Wing is scheduled for Oct 14 at 9:00 PM. I will send out reminders one week ahead of that date, but you may want to add it to your calendar now. I had originally scheduled it for September, but since we are having a Commander's Call in September, I thought a better idea would be for an October meeting. Topics will be the Annual Safety Survey, member safety compliance and Unit requirements. All Group Commanders and Group Safety Officers are invited to attend and of course all Unit commanders and their Safety Officer are also invited.

Proper procedures for reporting Accidents or Incidents -

Here is a reminder on the proper procedure for inputting an accident or incident into the SMS in E-Services. First, there are two parts to fill out. Part one needs to be filled out as soon as possible. In Part 1 you only make a VERY BRIEF report of what happened. For example "Cadet tripped as he/she entered the office". Make it as brief as possible. Then fill out the rest of the form. Within 48 hours, you need to fill out Part 2. There you follow the directions as shown. If you need help call me. In any case, you must notify the Pennsylvania Wing Commander and the Pennsylvania Director of Safety immediately for any accident or incident. This procedure has been discussed many times. If you need help, just call me.

Safety Conference Calls -

Every other month, the safety team conducts a conference call with all Gp Commanders, their safety officers and the unit commanders and their safety officers. Topics are announced in emails sent to all commanders with the log in details. The next meeting will be in October.

Safety Information Files -

Every unit should have a Safety Information File available for unit members to read. Flying Magazine and AOPA Pilot Magazine have excellent articles available each month for pilots and various insurance companies have a wealth of information available on request.

Safety Bulletin Boards -
A quick reminder concerning your unit safety bulletin board. Please remember to check the board on a regular basis. Make sure current information is posted and the unit, group, wing and national safety policies are posted. Be sure to put any safety information on the board as soon as it is received.

E-Safety -

Unit Commanders and Group Commanders, please verify with your safety officer that they are receiving this newsletter. If not, have them go to the Wing Web page and click on safety and scroll down to you see "Subscribe to the E-Safety newsletter".

For those unit safety officers looking for alternate means for pilots who miss their monthly safety meetings, try these from AOPA A Safer Pilot - see below.
