JUNE 2013

Dear Safety Officers, Commanders, and Deputy CCs,

Summer Safety -

It is that time of the year when the weather gets nice and all the outside activities begin in Pennsylvania Wing. Of course with all this activity, accidents increase. Please review "101 Days of Summer Safety" at http://www.slideshare.net/AtlantaSafetyCouncil/101-days-of-summer-safety-brief. This power-point is an excellent method of reminding your members about Summer Safety. Hazards include bug bites, more drivers on the road, drinking, inattentive driving, sunburn, dehydration, thunderstorms and many other hazards. There are many sources of information about summer activities, review them with your unit.

Proper procedures for reporting Accidents or Incidents -

Here is a reminder on the proper procedure for inputting an accident or incident into the SMS in E-Services. First, there are two parts to fill out. Part one needs to be filled out as soon as possible. In Part 1 you only make a VERY BRIEF report of what happened. For example "Cadet tripped as he/she entered the office". Make it as brief as possible. Then fill out the rest of the form. Within 48 hours, you need to fill out Part 2. There you follow the directions as shown. If you needs help call me. In any case, you must notify the Pennsylvania Wing Commander and the Pennsylvania Director of Safety immediately for any accident or incident. This procedure has been discussed many times. If you need help, just call me.

E-Safety -

Unit Commanders and Group Commanders, please verify with your safety officer that they are receiving this newsletter. If not, have them go to the Wing Web page and click on safety and scroll down to you see "Subscribe to the E-Safety newsletter".

Safety Conference Calls -

Every other month, the safety team conducts a conference call with all Gp Commanders, their safety officers and the unit commanders and their safety officers. Topics are announced in emails sent to all commanders with the log in details. The next meeting will be in July.

For those unit safety officers looking for alternate means for pilots who miss their monthly safety meetings, try these from AOPA A Safer Pilot - see below.
