A host of Web resources to make you a safer pilot

Dedicated to making general aviation flying easier and safer, the AOPA Air Safety Foundation offers a number of safety education resources free of charge to all pilots. Here are some helpful Web links: Learn more in less time with interactive online courses; test your knowledge with instantly scored quizzes; search the accident database; check the schedule for safety seminars coming to your area; and print publications from the library. After you've had a chance to review these popular resources, show your support for the foundation by donating.
For those unit safety officers looking for alternate means for pilots who miss their monthly safety meetings, try these from AOPA ASF.

E-Safety Newsletter

NOVEMBER 2012

This month's newsletter is an explanation of everything that is coming due in the next three months for safety compliance.

1st is the Annual Safety Survey - this document is found on-line under SMS (Safety Management System). The unit commander or unit safety officer will complete this report beginning on Oct 1 of each year.  The completion date is NLT 31 Jan of each year.  However, Pennsylvania Wing policy and now North East Region policy is the completion date is 31 December.  The report takes 15 minutes or less and involves just reading the question and clicking on "yes", "no" or "NA".  Clicking "NA" indicates the question does not apply to your unit.  In the remark section just write the reason for the "NA".  Such as "no aircraft assigned".  Clicking "yes" indicates that your unit is in compliance with the question.  Clicking on "no" indicates that your unit is NOT in compliance with the question.  If you click "no" you must explain why in the remarks section and indicate the date you expect to be in compliance.  Also when you do complete the requirement you will need to go into the safety survey and make the corrections. And don't forget to submit button on the bottom.

If you are the Group Commander or Group Safety Officer, you need to do the annual safety survey for your group and also review each of your squadron's safety surveys.  If they are "OK" the reviewer just needs to click on "Review OK" or if not correct click on "Review not OK".  Just remember, the surveys need to be completed by December 31.

2nd safety requirement is the annual schedule of safety topics for your unit's monthly safety meeting.  The unit safety officer just sends a listing of the topics and dates for each monthly meeting to the Group HQ and they in turn will send them to Wing.  You may repeat last years scheduled, just change the dates to reflect the new year.  The report must include your units name and CHARTER NUMBER and the unit commander and safety officer name.  This is due to Wing by Jan 15.  Send to Wing via your Group HQ.  The topics can be of any subject but you must include ORM Training and the Annual Safety Day (in either Jan, Feb or March).  Be sure to indicate this when filling out the Monthly Safety Report.

3rd requirement is the Unit Commanders Safety Policy.  This policy indicates how the commander will conduct the safety policy in his or her unit.  It is a narrative and needs to be submitted only once unless the unit commander is changed.  If there are no changes, just send an email indicating there is no change to your group and group will compile and send on to wing.  This is due by Jan 15 to wing.

4th safety requirement is the annual unit safety day.  The annual Safety Down Day in the past was conducted in October of each year. This was changed last year to have it at the unit's choice of anytime in either January, February or March.  And the name was changed to just Annual Safety Day.  The purpose is to allow the unit to reflect on safety issues that involve their unit and to allow a discussion on matters important to the safety in the unit.  All members must participate and is recorded in SMS as your monthly safety briefing.  However the time should be at least one hour.

And those are the requirements, if you need any assistance, contact your group safety officer or the Wing Director of Safety or any of the assistants.

Member Monthly Safety Requirements - Members should remember that each month they are required to complete their monthly safety review.  This can be accomplished on-line, at your unit meeting (or any unit's meeting), AOPA,  FAA or any of the other safety briefings available to you.  Failure to be safety compliant results in you not being able to participate in ANY CAP Activity including meetings.

Now just a reminder about the approaching Winter weather.  Sitting here in Florida where the temperature is in the upper 70's may make it difficult to write about Winter Weather, but alas I shall be returning to the North in about 2 weeks.  Having the proper items in your vehicle is very important.  When I stopped in Dayton Ohio in a snow storm, I realized very quickly that I didn't even have a snow scraper or brush.  Credit cards do work in a pinch, but not very practical.  So now is the time to verify what you need to be in your car.  Snow brush and scraper, blanket, food, water, cell phone and charger.  Think what you may need and get a go kit for your vehicle.  Remember how to drive on snow.  People tend to have poor memories when reference to snow or ice.  Just take your time and listen to weather reports.

Any questions about anything just send me an email  [email protected].

Be safe out there.
