Visit from Janome's Yutaka Koyama from Japan
The Fabric Garden was happy to welcome a visit from Yutaka Koyama, Product Development Supervisor of Janome Sewing Machine Company.  Mr. Koyama was joined by Janome's Northeast District Sales Manager, Russ Schwers.

For those of you who participated in our Janome survey, your ideas and insight were shared during this visit, in order for Janome to continue developing best-in-class machines.  Many thanks for those who took the time to participate in the survey.

Oops!  Triangle Frenzy Runner Kit
We discovered a small error in the kits we put together for the Triangle Frenzy Runner, done in Lavender Market fabrics.    Six people out there have kits purchased at our booth at Maine Quilts, which contains a slight error.   Please give us a call at 207-474-9628, and we will be happy to assist you with directions.
Tribute Quilt Block for our late father
Kala and Celia submitted a star-themed block to the the Astronomical Quilts Block Challenge in Houston, Texas.  (Thanks for putting our block together, Susie!).

The challenge was prompted by NASA Astronaut Karen Nyberg, the first-ever quilter in space.  All the blocks will be joined together and put on display at the 40th Anniversary Show of the International Quilt Festival this fall in Houston.   For more information, click here.

This one's for you, Dad.

Letter accompanying our block, sent to Rhianna Griffin, coordinator for the challenge:

Dear Rhianna,

Enclosed please find our quilt block to be submitted to the Astronomical Quilts! Block Challenge.   We would like to thank you and NASA Astronaut Karen Nyberg for putting together such a unique and historical challenge.

Our quilt block contains a fabric photo from 1964 of our late father, Edward J. Murphy, Manufacturing Engineer for the Lunar Module.   The photo may be found on NASA's website, in the "Postcards From The Field" section. It is #5 in the series.

Our father's career at Grumman in Bethpage, Long Island spanned for 43 stellar years. During that time he worked on programs for the Lunar Module, components of the Space Shuttle, and many other aerospace and aeronautic ventures.

This was a very meaningful and fitting challenge for us.   We are a quilt shop, and our father helped us a nation journey to space.

This quilt block is made to honor and remember the man who was, is, and always will be-the star in our lives.

Respectfully submitted.

Kala and Celia

Another Great Quilt Show by Maine Quilts
A big thanks to all who came to Maine Quilts 2014.    It's always a pleasure to see the beautiful quilts, meet the quilters and artisans, and just say "hi" to everyone.    And to all the volunteers and people behind the scenes, job well done.

And congratulations to Gwen Rix!  We donated a Janome Memory Craft 8900 QCP, which was raffled off to benefit the Pine Tree Quilters Guild, and Gwen was the random winner!

Thanks to all who voted!
Thanks to all the Shop-Hoppers who voted for our Shop Challenge Quilt during this past April's State of Maine Quilt Shop Hop.  Our quilt was awarded a  third-place ribbon.

Great job to our very own Robin for piecing and quilting this one!

All of the Maine Quilt Shop Hop quilts were on display this past July at Maine Quilts 2014.    It was a beautiful collection.

The quilt was made (with permission) with Studio 180 Design's / Deb Tucker's pattern called "Doubly Charmed".

The magical thing about this pattern is that it uses one set of charm squares, and creates two quilts.   You use the center beams of the charm set for one quilt, and the cutaway scraps for the second.  Our submission was the cutaway scrap version.  It's like making a turkey dinner, then using the leftovers to make a casserole.  Doubly purposed - doubly charmed.

The quilt features the colorful array of fabrics from this year's Maine Shop Hop fabric selection: Bear Essentials 2 by P&B Fabrics.

We are happy to carry a large assortment of patterns and rulers by Studio 180 Designs and Deb Tucker.

Spotlight On: Suzy's Zoo

We've always loved Suzy's Zoo.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, you might recognize her adorable creations.

Artist Suzy Spafford has created a new line of fabrics for Hoffman Fabrics called, "The Great Outdoors".
Happy little bear, moose, foxes, squirrels, raccoons are wonderfully captured in this collection.

And here's the best part - the quilt kit, featuring all of the little creatures peeking out of tents.
The tent flaps are three-dimensional, stitched lightly.  Or tack with hook & loop closures to create an interactive playtime quilt for your favorite little camper.

We have quilt kits available (they're selling fast), called "A Camping We Will Go".

Here's a photo of this whimsical creation from our booth at Maine Quilts.
