A great deal of discussion is happening across Australia about immigration. Fear, misconceptions, and lack of information have created a climate of uncertainty about offering support, services or a helping hand to many groups of "new" Australians. However, by taking the time to gain awareness and reconfirm your support to help young people-all young people-you will take an important step toward making mentoring relationships, programs and your community more responsive to a growing need that cannot and should not be overlooked. Culture influences virtually every aspect of life, from your general perspective or outlook on the world to the understanding of what constitutes socially acceptable behaviour. Culture also has a broad explanation of "shared motives, values, beliefs, identities, and interpretations or meanings of significant events that result from common experiences of members of collectives that are transmitted across generations".  And with cross-cultural mentoring the challenge begins with the very perception of the task, as 'mentoring' is perceived differently in different cultures and even a definition of mentoring will vary cross-culturally. Read more

The 2014 Australian Youth Mentoring Conference, which will take place 30 June - 1 July in Fremantle, WA. We are pleased to confirm Dr Michael Karcher, co-editor of the Youth Mentoring Handbook; Dr Tim Cavell, co-author of the Youth Mentoring Handbook; Professor Colleen Hayward; Associate Professor Judy MacCallum and Dr Lance Emerson, CEO ARACY as keynote speakers. An Investigation of Same- versus Cross-gender Matching for Boys in Formal School-based Mentoring Programs 

 

Although assigned mentoring relationships have typically involved same-gender matches, a growing number of programs, particularly those in schools, have begun pairing female mentors with male mentees. This practice stems, in large part, from the relative dearth of male mentors and programs' efforts to increase the availability of youth mentoring to young males on waiting lists. Read more
