Buy a Coffee and Borrow a Bike for the Day!
A group of cafes in Brno, Czech Republic have come together to offer customers free biking through their new bike-share scheme. When a customer goes in to buy a drink, they put down a deposit and are given a lock and a folding bike. They will then be able to use the bike for the day and return it to any of the participating centers around the city.
Brno's business bike-sharing is a small operation, but is unique and is inspiring for other businesses and cities around the world.

Oyster Season is Here and so is
Shell Recycling

Back when South Carolina's last oyster cannery closed in 1986, instead of being planted back into the oyster beds, oyster shells were widely dispersed and many would end up in landfills after backyard oyster roasts.

The state recognized that without planted shells, there can be no more oysters. To stop this from occurring and to preserve the inshore marine habitat, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) started its own oyster seed planting program in the 1980's, and in 2000 initiated a recycling program to address the shortage of shells.
The growth of oyster shell recycling awareness has allowed the DNR to reduce its dependence of out-of-state vendors and long-range transport.

Since the start of the DNR's recycling program:

192,618 bushels of shell have been recycled and

408,898 bushels have been planted on shellfish grounds.

There are now
27
oyster recycling drop-off points in S.C.
and

74 state and public shellfish grounds where recreational harvesting in allowed.

Drop City trailer
Drop City Trailer

DROP CITY is a story of whimsical innovation and the drive to create a new civilization on the scrapheap of a wasteful society. Often cited as the first rural commune of the 1960's, Drop City was an experimental community on the plains of Southern Colorado that blended practices of art, architecture, and resourceful living in ways that came to define a global counterculture.
