VADM C. Russell Bryan, USN (Ret.)

VADM C.R. Bryan, USN Ret.

We received word recently that Adm. Russell Bryan passed away on June 7th at the age of 89.

Our alumni will remember him fondly. According to one, "Admiral Bryan was a great man who guided many young lives along honorable and hard-working paths"; another remarked, "He was one of the favorite and most admired people I have had contact with in my life." Adm. Bryan was an honorary member of the Webb Alumni Association. more...

Alumni Spotlight: Matthew P. Tedesco '91

Tedsco Reading the Alumni Spotlights, anyone can see that there are many paths to Webb.  In my case, my father had grown up in Glen Cove and brought Webb to my attention.  I loved sailing on Long Island Sound, had always been passionate about computers, and had a strong interest in math and science.  Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering seemed like a great way to combine my interests in one career. So when it was time for me to apply to college, Webb was at the top of my list.  Spending time on campus clinched the deal. more...

Student Spotlight: The Webb Running Club

Webb Running Club

The Webb Running Club (WRC) got its start in the spring of 2011, when a group of students, united by a common interest in amateur competitive running, expressed their collective desire to sample the racing scene across Long Island and beyond.  In acknowledgement of the cost of attending events and the potential for recognition and increased school presence, the Administration of Webb Institute bestowed upon the student body a generous annual budget for the pursuit of all things fleet of foot, and thus the Webb Running Club was born. more...

Newport News Apprentice

SNAME student members from the Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) Apprentice School enjoyed a weekend visit to Webb Institute on September 21-23, 2012.  The Apprentice School is a traditional shipbuilding trade school with a modern college curriculum that combines old-school practices with contemporary knowledge.  Students at The Apprentice School build and maintain nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines for the United States Navy. more...

Webb's Weekend Regatta

From September 22- 23 Webb hosted its own fall regatta, the Coho Memorial, which was organized by seniors Roxanne Schacht and Troy Zangle.  Racing was held both days in favorable conditions, excluding a brief abandonment Sunday morning due to heavy wind.  The young Webb team sailed exceptionally well on our home turf and went on to win the event in dramatic fashion. Congratulations go out to skippers Cody Stansky, Casey Brown, and Troy Zangle and their crews Kurt Gavel, Erin Hub, Samm Griswold, Oleg Golubev, and T. Graham Fisher. After sailing, the competitors graciously enjoyed a post-race cookout on the yacht club patio.

Webb Institute It is that time of year when we are corresponding with shipyards for the freshmen to work at this winter.  We have 24 freshmen to place this year.  If you know of a contact for a yard, please contact Josie Wilson at jwilson@webb-institute.edu or 516-671-2213 Ext. 108. Webb is also seeking sea term berths for our sophomores. It is becoming more and more difficult to find spots for all our sophomores.  Please let Josie Wilson know if you have any information on berths.  We have 19 students to send out to sea this winter. more...
