Today's Courage, Tomorrow's Hope
John and Florence Melster were married for nearly 72 years
~Stories from the Alzheimer's Journey ~

Donating Brain Tissue to Advance Science

John Melster was a well-known and very active man in Waukesha County.  He was a husband of 72 years to Florence, a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to many.  He was a manufacturer's representative who worked until he was 89.  He was a Wisconsin Senior Olympian who played tennis until age 84 and ping pong until age 90.  He was an active member at St. Matthias Episcopal Church for 62 years.  And he served his beloved Waukesha County community until he was 90, raising funds for Carroll University, serving  on the board of directors of the Parents Place,  delivering Meals on Wheels,  campaigning for United Way, working with the Boy Scouts and acting as Treasurer for the Friends of the Waukesha Public Library. In fact, John Melster never stopped giving back, even after he died in March at the age of 92.

Researchers Discover New Protein That May Play Role in Alzheimer's Disease

Research presented at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference 2014 (AAIC) held in Copenhagen in July, reported a new protein that potentially may play a role in the disease. Researchers said what they don't yet know is whether the protein, called TDP-43, is a cause of Alzheimer's or develops due to the disease. TDP-43 has previously been linked to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) and other brain diseases. Additional research is necessary to clarify its role in Alzheimer's. Read more here

Memories in the Making Art on Display in August at Martha Merrell's Books in Waukesha
Gail Mueller enjoys art from the Memories in the Making program during a Gallery Night preview at Martha Merrell's

During the entire month of August, a very special art show from the Memories in the Making program will be on display at Martha Merrell's Books in downtown Waukesha. The display features the work of seven Waukesha residents living with dementia and their care partners who came together in July to to enjoy painting.

Each painting has an accompanying story. We have purposely chosen not to identify which paintings were created by our artists living with dementia, As a viewer, we hope you will leave the exhibit with a greater understanding that those in our community living with Alzheimer's dementia are PEOPLE JUST LIKE YOU!

The art was created as part of the Early-Stage Social Engagement Program, which offers a fun and comfortable way for people living in the early-stage of Alzheimer's or other dementia to get out, get active and get connected with one another through a variety of social events and community-based activities.  The events and activities are determined by individual needs and interests of the participants and promote social interaction and companionship.

Please plan to visit Martha Merrell's Books in August to see this wonderful exhibit!

Silver Alert Goes Live in Wisconsin on August 1

Thanks to our many Alzheimer's advocates in Wisconsin, the Silver Alert was not only passed into law by our state legislature in the spring, but is now up and running. In partnership with the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, the Outdoor Advertising Association of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Silver Alerts may be broadcast through television and radio, digital billboards, and lottery display terminals. Silver Alerts cannot utilize the Emergency Alert System.

Silver Alerts will be issued when the following criteria are met:

  • The missing person is 60 years of age or older;
  • The missing person is believed to have Alzheimer's, dementia, or another permanent cognitive impairment that poses a threat to the individual's health and safety;
  • There is reasonable belief that the missing person's disappearance is due to the individual's impaired cognitive condition;
  • The Silver Alert request is made within 72 hours of the individual's disappearance;
  • There is sufficient information available to disseminate to the public that could assist in locating the missing person.

Newsweek Magazine Spotlights Common Misconceptions about Alzheimer's Disease

At least 44 million people worldwide are living with Alzheimer's - a fatal, progressive disease - but many basic facts about the disease are not well known. A new Alzheimer's Association international survey found that Alzheimer's is misunderstood and underestimated, despite being the second-most-feared disease behind cancer.  Read the article here

Plan for Your Future.  Make Your Wishes Known.

"A lot of people don't want to talk about the hard choices ... what they don't realize though is now is the time to plan for your future." Michael A., an individual living with Alzheimer's

Everyone can certainly benefit by having a financial or legal plan in place.  But that is especially true for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and their families. Learning about financial and legal options, and making informed choices while the person with dementia is still able to express wishes for future care, makes things less stressful later. It also allows a family the time it needs to work through the complex issues involved in long-term care.

Visit the Alzheimer's Association's website to learn more about making plans for your future.
Alzheimer' Association Partners with Milwaukee Film Festival

This fall, the Alzheimer's Association will be assisting the Milwaukee Film Festival as a community partner to promote the screening of the film,

The festival runs from September 25th to October 9th. A date for the film's showing is not yet available.  See the film's trailer here and join us in the fall.
