APRIL 25, 2015

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- BOSTON

Cig Harvey Brings Gardening at Night to Robert Klein Gallery and

Robert Klein Gallery @ Ars Libri

Moody, dark, and sensuous, Cig Harvey's 2015 monograph Gardening at Night explores family, time, and nature through the eyes of a new mother. With the artist's dreamlike text grounded by details of daily life, Gardening at Night is foremost a sensorial experience.

For her third solo exhibition with Robert Klein Gallery, Harvey extends her reach beyond photographs to include animations, embroideries, drawings, and neon. The Gardening at Night exhibition will encompass two spaces, with works on display at ROBERT KLEIN GALLERY (38 Newbury St) and at its satellite space, ROBERT KLEIN GALLERY @ ARS LIBRI (500 Harrison Ave).

A First Friday reception will take place on Friday, May 1st, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Robert Klein Gallery @ Ars Libri. An afternoon reception will be held the next day, Saturday, May 2nd, from 2 to 5 PM at Robert Klein Gallery. Harvey will be present at both events. Signed copies of Gardening at Night (Schilt Publishing, 2015), with an essay by photography critic Vicki Goldberg, will be available for $50.

Of the work, Vogue magazine writes: "Cig Harvey reveals the mysticism in the mundane. Her photos, taken over the course of four years, explore the passage of time and show that home is wherever you look for it."

Harvey has an uncanny sense for distilling universal meaning from personal experiences, and her work is, as a result, both elegant and feral. Bare feet, scabbed knees, and dead birds share wall space (and pages) with fur coats, chipped nail polish, and wildflowers bordering on weeds. Shown together with the artist's drawings and embroideries -- a unique series of 20 pieces titled Cultural Miscellanea -- subtly animated versions of still images, and neon, Gardening at Night is an intimate exhibition with an expansive scope.

Photographs and artist's books by CIG HARVEY, MFA, have been widely exhibited and reside in the permanent collections of major museums and collections worldwide. A native of Devon, England, Harvey sees her photographs as vignettes that depict daily life in all its complexities. In addition to self-portraits, Harvey makes pictures of family and close friends to better understand their relationships. Her photographs are an attempt to legitimize her moments of uncertainty and to visually celebrate times of elation, when we are reminded that the world, in all its complexities, can be mind-blowingly beautiful. She uses color, gesture and space to seduce the imagination.

Harvey was a recent finalist for the BMW Prize at Paris Photo and the Prix Virginia, an international photography prize for women. Her first solo museum show was held at the Stenersen Museum in Oslo, Norway, in the spring of 2012, coinciding with the release of her monograph, You Look At Me Like An Emergency (Schilt Publishing, 2012). With her vibrant photographs and startlingly honest writing, Harvey transforms quotidian experiences that reference time and place, creating totems that mark key places in her life.

Harvey was an assistant professor at the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University for ten years. Now devoting her life purely to the creative process, Harvey lives in a renovated Maine farmhouse with her husband, Doug; their daughter, Scout; and their dog, Scarlet Snacks.

ROBERT KLEIN GALLERY was established in 1980 and ranks among the world's most prestigious showrooms of fine art photography.

Robert Klein opened his Newbury Street space with early exhibitions of Diane Arbus, Annie Leibovitz, Sally Mann, and Hiroshi Sugimoto. From 1995 through 2008, Robert served as President of the Board of Directors of the Association of International Photography Dealers (AIPAD). During his tenure, Robert engineered the 2006 expansion of The AIPAD Photography Show New York to the Park Avenue Armory. The AIPAD Photography Show's move firmly established it as one of the leading photographic fairs in the world.

Robert Klein Gallery maintains an extensive and ever-changing inventory of 19th century, 20th century, and contemporary photographs. Participating in international art fairs such as Paris Photo, The Armory Show - Modern, and The AIPAD Photography Show New York, Robert Klein Gallery provides its contemporary artists with international exposure while exhibiting works by recognized masters such as Ansel Adams, Helen Levitt, and Irving Penn. With over 40 combined years of experience and a profound knowledge base, the gallery staff is committed to serving as a resource for both novice and seasoned collectors.

In June 2012, ROBERT KLEIN GALLERY began a long-term collaboration with ARS LIBRI, the rare and out-of-print bookdealer, to host satellite installations in the South End bookstore. Exhibits at Robert Klein Gallery @ Ars Libri supplement and complement Robert Klein Gallery shows with additional works and printed material.

In 2013, Robert Klein Gallery and Ars Libri partnered with AZITA BINA to introduce Western collectors to the work of contemporary Iranian artists -- in particular, contemporary Iranian photographers. Bina, a Boston-based chef and restaurateur, was born in Tehran, Iran, and lived there until the 1970s. Returning regularly to her homeland, Bina maintains close ties to the Persian art community and possesses an informed understanding of contemporary Iranian artists.
