Magda Biernat's Photographs about Global Climate Change

BOSTON, MA - MAGDA BIERNAT'S Adrift exhibition at ROBERT KLEIN GALLERY @ ARS LIBRI (500 Harrison Ave) will open with an artist's reception on Friday, April 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Biernat (Polish, b. 1978) has photographed some of Earth's remotest locales, including Antarctica and Alaska, and for Adrift she focused in on icebergs and Inupiat Eskimo huts whose shapes and volumes echo one another. The series is a quiet, haunting study of organic and inorganic structures succumbing to the effects of global climate change. Adrift is Biernat's first show with ROBERT KLEIN GALLERY.
In her statement about the work, Biernat writes: "time and change work inevitable degradation on all things. As an architectural photographer, I've always been fascinated by structures in different states of decay. During a year's journey from the Antarctic to the Arctic Circle, I was drawn to subjects that were both a departure from my work and a familiar target...The Earth's polar regions are profoundly affected by climate change. Average temperatures in the Arctic and Antarctic regions are rising twice as fast as they are elsewhere in the world. As they drift, the city-block-sized icebergs will disappear at a faster rate than ever before."
The cool, icy blues of the Antarctic icebergs and the myriad whites and grays of the Eskimo hunting huts are a binary palette that gives the architectural aspect of Biernat's photographs an added appeal. Angles of ice blocks and curves of snowdrifts echo one another. Writes Biernat: "the hunting cabins of the Inupiat are mirrors of the lone ice mountains in the south, singular polar structures under pressure from changing ecosystems; silent and static witnesses to change." Grouped en masse, the pictures form a visual typology that hint at the polarization of public opinion on climate change.
Biernat brings her architectural eye and environmentalist approach to Robert Klein Gallery's roster of likeminded artists, which includes CHRIS JORDAN (American, b. 1963), KAREN HALVERSON (American, b. 1941), JEFF BROUWS (American, b. 1955) and JIM DOW (American, b. 1942). In advance of her exhibition at Robert Klein Gallery @ Ars Libri, Biernat will give a lecture at ANNENBERG SPACE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY in Los Angeles, CA, on Thursday, April 2, about her personal exploration into the built environment and its impact on the natural world.

In June 2012, ROBERT KLEIN GALLERY began a long-term collaboration with ARS LIBRI, the rare and out-of-print bookdealer, to host satellite installations in the South End bookstore. Exhibits at Robert Klein Gallery @ Ars Libri supplement and complement Robert Klein Gallery shows with additional works and printed material.
In 2013, Robert Klein Gallery and Ars Libri partnered with AZITA BINA to introduce Western collectors to the work of contemporary Iranian artists -- in particular, contemporary Iranian photographers. Bina, a Boston-based chef and restaurateur, was born in Tehran, Iran, and lived there until the 1970s. Returning regularly to her homeland, Bina maintains close ties to the Persian art community and possesses an informed understanding of contemporary Iranian artists.
