Where do Potholes come from?

It's that time of the year again, when we learn to unexpectedly swerve on the road to avoid potholes.

If you've been in a car around NYC in the last few months, you know what I'm talking about. Large holes that appear in the road overnight, some as large as 2 feet wide. They slow down traffic, are hard to avoid, can ruin your car, and never seem to get fixed fast enough - if at all.

A few years ago I set out to find out what causes potholes. It all has to do with water seeping into the pavement, freezing, creating new space, thawing, and then it all crumbling from vehicle pressure. Find out What Causes Potholes.

I also found out how to report potholes to NYC and that you can even submit a claim form for damage caused by potholes. I did, in fact, submit a claim to NYC in 2011 when I ruined a tire after going over a pothole. Sadly, my claim was rejected because the pothole had been fixed before I submitted my claim.
