NYC's New Parking Signs
NYC's New Parking Signs

If you've beaten a NYC parking ticket with the defense of ‘the parking signs weren't clear’, you may have run out of luck. Last week, NYC revealed new parking signs designed to take up less room and make the regulations more clear.

As you can see from the photo to the right, the main improvements are:

The somewhat bizarre NYC parking rules are explained in only 140 characters, down from 250 characters,
Red signs are for Commercial Vehicles, Green signs are for Passenger Vehicles,
The number of hours parking allowed is prominently placed in a reversed-out box at the top left of the sign,
Signs are in both upper and lower case rather than all uppercase,
The size of the NYC parking rule signs has been reduced from 5 feet to 4 feet, and
There are no more blue signs telling drivers to pay at the nearest Muni-Meter. Since there are no more single space NYC parking meters on the street, the only option for payment is at the Muni-Meter.

The new parking signs will cost about $180,000 to produce and install. You'll start seeing them in commercial parking areas of midtown, Upper East Side, Lower Manhattan, and Financial District. The new signs will first be installed from 14th – 60th Streets and from 2nd – 9th Avenues. By Spring 2013, 6,300 new NYC street signs will be installed. Read more at our blog.

But if you DO get a darned NYC parking ticket, here are some tips from our friends at New York Parking Ticket.

1. Check your ticket for mistakes including wrong date, VIN, address, registration date,
2. Know the difference among No Standing, No Parking, No Stopping, and
3. Fight your tickets with photos, affidavits, and the correct language.
