| Greetings from Commission Chair Yvonne Fry |
Our commission has been very productive and we are excited to share our updates and initiatives in this newsletter. Staying connected and incorporating citizens in our work is important to our mission and we welcome your feedback and support of our programs!
The FCSW was proud to host the National Commission on the Status of Women conference in Sarasota in July with over 85 women from across the country in attendance for the conference, as we showcased our great state and many of our amazing Florida women. The FCSW and many local COSW members and interested individuals and organizations attended this event and contributed to the planning sessions for the NACW as well as took away a lot of valuable information from the experts who presented at the many breakout sessions. A beautiful reception at the University of South Florida's Sarasota campus and an interactive visit of the Mote Marine.
We also held our third quarterly meeting of the FCSW in West Palm Beach and had a dynamic day-long meeting. Our commissioners are committed and engaged and it's an exciting time for women in Florida. I am so honored to serve alongside of these incredible women and am pleased to highlight several of our commissioners in each of our upcoming newsletters so you can get to know those who are working on behalf of the women in our state.
The National Women's Hall of Fame and the Florida Commission on the Status of Women hosted a Conversation with Great Women in West Palm Beach, Florida on October 10, 2014. The Conversation featured National Women's Hall of Fall inductee Dr. Antonia Novello, Florida Women's Hall of Fame inductee Louise Gopher, and West Palm Beach mayor Dr. Jeri Muoio. The crowd was fascinated to hear the stories of the panelists' lives and learn the amazing and personal stories of passion, determination, and persistence.
Enjoy all of our other news and updates - especially how you can help influence legislation through our statewide Conversations with Women and Families and also our Women's Day at the Capitol. Your partnership in our work is essential!
were highlights to share our beautiful state with visitors from across the country. |

FCSW Announce 2015 Florida Women's Day at the Capitol |
by Commissioner Deborah Cox-Roush, Public Policy Committee Chair The Public Policy Committee's mission is to encourage women from across the state to become educated about the legislative process and bills that are being considered that affect Florida's families. The committee's broad goal for this year is to increase the significance of committee within the Commission and to the public.
Mark your calendars! Plans are now underway for our second annual Florida Women's Day at the Capitol, which will be held on March 24, 2015. The day will include opportunities to learn the basics of how the Florida Legislature works and join an interactive session on the public hearing process where you'll learn tips for how to testify on a bill. In addition, participants will tour the Capitol, meet and learn from Legislators, and network with women leaders from across Florida. The day will conclude with the 2015 Induction Ceremony of the Florida Women's Hall of Fame. The event is free and open to the public. This is a day you will not want to miss. Look for more news and information to be announced soon! |
by Commissioner Chloe Gentry, Public Outreach Committee Chair
An exciting project in the works is the re-branding of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women, beginning with the creation of a new logo. Our previous logo, created in 1991 was a traditional, mono-tone Florida seal, and it has served us well. We are please to have updated logo with color, imagery and a brand voice that highlights the Commission's focus on collaboration and outreach and portrays feminine strength and enlightenment in Florida. This was no easy task, but we are proud to reveal our new look! You will soon see this new logo on more of our print and web materials as we transition to our new image.
This is just the beginning of the process. As we seek to connect with as many women, families, organizations and communities throughout Florida, we recognize that our web presence can contribute significantly to our goals. We are working on redesigning and re-structuring the FCSW website to be more appealing, more relevant and more interactive. As we work on our website project, if you have ideas or suggestions on content you would like to see on our website or on our FaceBook page, please let us know by emailing: kelly.sciba@myfloridalegal.com . We'd love to hear from you. |

FCSW Hosts Community Conversations Statewide |
by Commissioner Patti Hamilton, Annual Report Committee Chair
Reporting to the legislature on an annual basis is just one of the goals of the FCSW. The subject of this report has varied throughout the years and it was decided by the Annual Report committee to venture in a new direction never taken before. In the spirit of our mission to be focused on the status of Florida's women and families, the 2014 Annual Report will be one that reports on the most up to date and current issues women are experiencing in their communities. This report will truly be one on the "Status of Women," and will be entitled "Your Voice Matters: A Conversation with Florida Women and Families."
Members of the commission along with the assistance of women's commissions and organizations in communities across Florida will be hosting open and informational conversations with the women in our communities. With the guidance of a facilitator our goal is to ensure the discussion is recorded and/or transcribed and provided back to the FCSW office in Tallahassee. Organizers are gathering people from diverse backgrounds and to offer a setting for them to express their views openly. The FCSW would also like to highlight a few individual stories from women in each community who are willing to share their stories and be highlighted in the report. Click here for a calendar of upcoming Conversations. An on-line survey is also available for those who would like to participate but are unable to attend a forum.
We encourage and welcome participation from as many people as possible from all areas of our state. If you are interested in participating, please contact Kelly Sciba at 850-414-3530. |
