A July 2014 research study, Coffee enema for preparation for small bowel video capsule endoscopy: a pilot study, shows "coffee enemas may be a feasible option, and there were no clinically significant adverse events related to coffee enemas."

According to the study, excreted bile is one of the causes of poor preparation of the small bowel for an endoscopy.
