Smitty's Starts Work on $10 Million Warehouse Expansion
|
Smitty's Supply has started work on a $10 million warehouse and office expansion. The additions should add 50 jobs to the 400 people already employed by the company in northern Tangipahoa Parish about 15 miles south of the Mississippi state line.
Owner Ed Smith, at a groundbreaking in Roseland, said that the work would also employ 100 construction workers to build the 165,000 square-foot expansion. The project will double the company's warehouse capacity.
Smitty's Supply blends, manufactures and packages lubricants that it sells nationwide under the Super S and other brands. It also makes products for major oil companies. The firm was founded in 1969 by Smith's parents.

Safety-Kleen's Rodney Walker Named Sustainability All-Star by Green Fleet Magazine
|
Walker honored for outstanding achievements in green fleet sustainability Rodney Walker, technical director of oil re-refining at Safety-Kleen, was named one of Green Fleet magazine's 2012 Sustainability All-Stars at the publication's annual Green Fleet Conference held this year in Schaumburg, Ill. Walker was selected as a Sustainability All-Star for his dedication to sustainability in the fleet industry, significant sustainability achievements, innovative contributions to reducing emissions and fuel consumption, and involvement in industry-wide efforts to promote sustainable fleet transportation solutions.
A leader at Safety-Kleen, the largest collector and re-refiner of used oil in North America, Walker is involved in formulating engine oil to help fleets reduce their Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by using re-refined engine oil. Walker is a long-time innovator in fleet sustainability, and has worked with government, commercial and private fleets to protect engines and the environment through the use of EcoPower® re-refined engine oil.
"Rodney is an important part of making EcoPower a success," said Curt Knapp, senior vice president and CMO of Safety-Kleen. "His technical expertise, experience and leadership are exceptional. We're proud to have Rodney as part of our leadership team."
Walker is also a leader in the industry outside of Safety-Kleen. He serves on several lubricant industry advisory panels and associations that work to find new solutions and standards to help reduce fleet emissions while maintaining or improving engine-protection standards. A member of the American Petroleum Institute's (API) New Category Development Team, Walker plays a pivotal role in developing "proposed category" 11 (PC-11), a new classification of engine oil for on-highway trucks that will help truck makers comply with mandated GHG emissions reduction. He also serves as chair of Precision Matrix Task Force, which is developing a precision model for PC-11, and is an active member of the Diesel Engine Oil Advisory Panel, API Auto Oil Advisory Panel and API Emerging Base Oil Technology Work Group.
"I am honored to be named one of Green Fleet's sustainability all-stars," Walker said. "But this award is really for all the people at Safety-Kleen, who demonstrate the passion and dedication to make the right choices to make green work."
More News From Safety-Kleen: In its newly released documentary, Safety-Kleen tells the EcoPower story about how engine oil can protect the environment and protect engines, even up to 1 million miles. It also shows how using EcoPower is one small step companies can take to help grow their business and become more sustainable. The video recently posted to EcoPower's Facebook page and is also accessible here: VIDEO LINK

Sunny Side Up - Ultrachem's Solar Project Completed
|
"We are pleased to announce the completion of this major renewable energy project", said Bob Whiting, President of Ultrachem. "Not only will the system improve the environment by reducing our reliance on traditional fossil fuels, it also relieves our energy burden from the electric grid during peak hours which benefits the community. All of the people at EnterSolar were fantastic to work with and completed the entire project on schedule."
The project is participating in the Delaware SREC Pilot Program and is interconnected to the New Castle Municipal Services Commission's utility system.
The system was installed on the roof of Ultrachem's Corporate Headquarters located in New Castle, Delaware and will generate enough energy to serve the entire annual electricity needs of the Ultrachem facility.
The state-of-the-art solar photovoltaic system features Delaware-manufactured MOTECH solar panels, two central inverters, and a string-level data acquisition system. The system is expected to produce over 200,000 kilowatt hours per year, or roughly the amount of electricity needed to power 30 home annually. This equates to the reduction of more than 270,000 pounds of carbon emissions each year.
"By installing their new solar PV system, Ultrachem has further established themselves as a community business leader while demonstrating how companies can 'do well, by doing good' ," said Paul Ahern, President of EnterSolar, "in addition to supporting the environment, Ultrachem will also see a significant reduction in electricity costs while mitigating future power price increases".
"We were delighted to have had the Ultrachem solar project selected to participate in the new Delaware SREC Pilot Program", said Steve Burns, EnterSolar Project Manager, "this program provided our client with the long-term cash flow visibility they required to make a prudent capital investment decision." This was EnterSolar's first major commercial solar project in Delaware. Installation services were provided by New Generation Energy & Development utilizing a workforce comprised primarily of Delaware residents.
