Dos & Don'ts

Can I post a job board ad even if the position is not available for six months?

(Answer provided at the end of the newsletter.)

5 Reasons to Hire Recent Graduates

Business owners and hiring managers are often reluctant to hire inexperienced graduates as it takes a lot of time to train and mentor them. However, bringing young talent on board is advantageous in five ways.
  1. Culture - Easier to mold into your company's culture.
  2. Affordable - Keeps salary budget low.
  3. Attitude - Eager to try new things.
  4. Perspective - New ideas are exchanged.
  5. Technology - Embrace and introduce new technology.
3 Effective WaysTo Attract College Talent

Millennial graduates job hunt differently from prior generations mainly due to technology. Thus, to hire top graduates, companies must use different recruiting strategies from years past. Turn your old-fashioned hiring methods into a newly improved strategy by following these methods:

  • Job fairs are old school. Grads are attracted to jobs through social media postings and word-of-mouth.
  • Formal job descriptions are boring. Grads want to understand company goals, values, and cultures through a compelling web presence.
  • Don't play hard to get. Grads build more interest when companies promptly reply back to applicants.
Hiring Tip

For new hires with delayed start dates, build a relationship. Periodically email or phone the new hire to keep them up to date on company news. Make them feel a part of the team by including them in a conference call or a meeting.

Answer to Today's Dos & Don'ts

"Can I post a job board ad even if the position is not available for six months?"

Yes, it is OK to advertise positions in anticipation of future hiring needs.  However, to avoid confusing candidates, it is best to include language in the posting that mentions an approximate future start date, even if it is months away.  Candidates will appreciate your honesty and transparency
