The Playful Punk

Shiloh is a stud colt (now gelding) we spotted at the Rusk County Sheriff's holding pen in March 2014. Luckily for Shiloh, we were there to see a horse seized by the Overton police, and as a result we learned of his plight. Found tied to a tree in the woods and left for dead, Shiloh was severely malnourished and dehydrated. The sheriff picked him up and held him for the requisite time. It's no surprise that no one claimed him, and we took him into our program.

Pegasus supporter and board member, Anne Ellis, has started the "Shiloh Fund" to aid during his recovery. Please donate in Shiloh's name if you'd like to help take care of this baby. Anne's sponsorship is strictly financial support, and Shiloh will remain available for adoption. Anne named the colt Shiloh which mean "peace."

The dentist puts Shiloh's age at 3 years old at the time of his rescue in 2014. His growth may be stunted from malnutrition, or perhaps he's a pony. He does have some features of a Hackney pony. After we brought him to the ranch, he started to really fill out and get healthy, but he's always going to be small.

Now that Shiloh is healthy and happy, we have started his training program. We worked with him on the ground, getting him ready for saddle work and instilling proper manners. His manners improved quickly (his nature is to be a little pushy), and he's a quick learner. By the end of 2014, he was ready for saddle training, and one of our trainers, Dale Kahl, is riding him regularly. Shiloh is a fun, forward-moving little horse who will make someone a perfect little partner. Don't miss your chance at this lovely little, playful guy.

As many of you know, one of Pegasus' trainers, Don Knapp, is battling squamous cell carcinoma of the throat. Don is currently undergoing chemotherapy and radiation at Texas Oncology, located next to Baylor Hospital in Plano, Texas.

Don is in his second week of treatment and is scheduled to receive a total of seven weeks of therapy. His long-term prognosis is unknown at this point. Thankfully, Don is being attended by his family from Canada. His daughters and sister are taking turns traveling to Texas to care for and stay with him.

For the past three years, Don has been an important part of the Pegasus team. We have had many horses come through these gates that we weren't sure could be turned around. but Don has a special way with troubled horses. He has helped some of our most complex and insecure rescue horses turn into calm, gentle partners for children and beginner and intermediate riders. Reese, Sunshine, Dane and Merlin are just a few examples of horses who were literally transformed by Don's consistent training and development.

In Don's absence, Pegasus' trainer, Dale Kahl, has really stepped up to fill the void. Dale has willingly dedicated additional hours to his work at Pegasus and is currently committed to developing more than a dozen horses. We are blessed to have such talent available to us in these difficult times.
If you would like to send Don an encouraging text, his phone number is 580.618.3699. Or you can send a card or note to: Don Knapp c/o Extended Stay, 4636 West Plano Parkway, Plano, TX 75093, Room 207. I'm sure he'd love to hear from his Pegasus family.

Your thoughts and prayers for Don's recovery are greatly appreciated.

North Texas Giving Day
A Smashing Success

Wow! Just wow! On September 17th The Pegasus Project participated for the first time in the Communities Foundation of Texas' North Texas Giving Day. As newbies, we weren't exactly sure what to expect. We set an ambitious goal of raising $50,000 for the horses. Because of you, we exceeded our goal, raising a total of $54,095!! And there are still bonus funds coming from CFT!

$20,000 of this amount came from our challenge fund donors,** who, in advance of North Texas Giving Day, put up these matching funds to encourage others to give. Knowing that their gift would be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000 was true incentive for the rest of our donors. On the day of the event, $30,345 was given through the NTGD website, with another $850 being donated directly to Pegasus. Pegasus will be receiving an additional $900 from our donors whose employers do gift matching, and we won a $2000 prize for having the second most donors for a newly participating small nonprofit!

Pegasus is still in the running for a $2500 prize for having the best integrated marketing campaign, and we will learn at the end of October whether we were selected. Pegasus is also due to collect additional bonus funds paid by CFT. Bonus fund amounts are based upon a percentage of all the 118,663 gifts (totaling more than $33 million) made that day to the more than 2000 participating nonprofits. We are humbled by the generosity of donors for all of these deserving North Texas charities.

As excited as we are with our success on North Texas Giving Day, we must remind ourselves that this work never ends. We often go from one crisis to the next. One fundraiser ends, another begins. One horse gets adopted, another neglected horse comes through the gates. It's a never-ending cycle of pain, joy, hardship, success, heartbreak and triumph. With an annual budget of more than $225,000, we will utilize the NTGD funds in less than three months. Pegasus accomplishes great things, but at great cost.

For now, we are going to revel in our success and celebrate our fantastic supporters. If you were one of our NTGD donors, please give yourself a pat on the back. It is amazing what can be accomplished when people come together for a united purpose. When individuals support their passions and realize that EVERY dollar truly does count, remarkable things happen.

Thank you!

Did you know Pegasus relies entirely on private donations? Our regular monthly donors, known as Pegasus Partners, are our most treasured assets. For as little as $10/month you can help provide us with a predictable source of income at a much lower cost than any other fundraising method.

While we are very appreciative of one-time donations, the monthly donations of our

Pegasus Partners allow us to plan ahead.

Our ability to save these helpless horses, donkeys and mules depends on YOUR donations!

We cannot do this without you! Please consider making a monthly donation so we may continue to rescue horses that have no future without us.
