Principal's Message

Hello Stanley Families-

We are happy to announce that Helen Kaidantzis and Emilia Gutman were selected by the Orinda-Moraga-Lafayette branch of AAUW as Stanley's Tech Trek scholarship winners to attend a week-long residential math, science, engineering, and technology camp at Stanford this summer.  Alex Mould was selected as the alternate.  AAUW's Tech Trek began in 1998 and is now held on eight different college campuses in California for young women entering the 8th grade. Tech Trek is a scholarship program and only girls who have been nominated by a teacher are eligible.  Seventeen 7th graders from Stanley were nominated.

The goals of Tech Trek Science and Math Camp for Girls are:
  1. Encourage young women to take math and science courses in high school
  2. Motivate students to attend college
  3. Inspire young women to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, or math
The selections were based on a broad-based interest in areas of science, math, and technology; a passion for learning; their essays and answers to application questions; career goals; experience in math and science projects; interpersonal skills; and a need for more opportunities to support their interest in STEM fields.  The AAUW representative reminded us:  "All the nominated girls are outstanding students, so it was a very difficult decision to select the winners.  We wish we could send every deserving nominee to camp, but unfortunately that is not possible.  We reminded each nominee and their parents that it is an honor just to be nominated by their teachers."

Stanley is proud of our winners and all the nominees!

Thanks to everyone and let's all keep focused and working hard during this busy time of our year!

  PTA Announcements and Events
PTA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Fellow Parents,

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Spring Break with your families.  It is a very busy time for the PTA with a variety of programs and events on the horizon.

PTA cannot function without great volunteers who do their part (and in many cases, more than their part).  I would like to specifically thank the following chairs:

- Thank you to our Teacher Appreciation chairs, Emma Bishopp and Rachel Yates, for preparing lunches for Stanley staff four times a year and coordinating the monthly birthday treats.  This duo has been in this role the last few years and Rachel doesn't even have children at Stanley anymore but wanted to continue to help.  Thanks ladies!

- Thank you to 6th grade parent, Julie Schmidt, who is our hot lunch chair this year.  Thanks Julie for all your help with Choicelunch and coordinating volunteers.

- Thank you Opportunity Knocks co-chairs, Linda Rotundo and Marie Mlynek, for leading this program and inspiring students towards service.

For those of you who have time this spring, one area where we could really use your help is with Campus Cruisers during lunch.  Currently, many weeks don't have anyone signed up.  Click here to sign up, and bring a friend too!

Finally...

Are you in?  Have you joined the 1,200+ parent voters who have already endorsed Measure C ?  Add your name to show your support for Measure C...to repair and renew our Lafayette schools.
Go to: www.YESforLafayetteSchools.org and click "Count ME In"

Thanks,
Kelly Mains

INDEPENDENT STUDY/ABSENCES
Each time your child misses school for any reason (sick, vacation, others) the Lafayette School District loses $51 per day in revenues from the state. Attendance in school is best for your child's education. If your child is ill, keep him/her home until well enough to return to school. If you must take your child on a trip for 5 days or more, please notify the office so that they may provide you with an Independent Study packet (please give the school at least 2 weeks notice for an Independent Study request) to help him/her keep up with schoolwork while away. Doing so is a WIN-WIN scenario. Your child keeps pace with the class and is considered PRESENT on those days (NOT ABSENT) for State funding purposes. However, for absences less than five days or absences greater than 5 days without a completed Independent Study, your child misses invaluable instruction time and the state withholds funding from the District at $51/day. The District strongly recommends that trips and vacations be scheduled during non-school days. Thank you!
