Hello Stanley Families-
On January 25th we held our second Character Assembly for all students. These assemblies are designed to communicate our expectations for student behavior and for how CHARACTER COUNTS for all of us. Our focus was on being a good citizen, both here at school but also online in the digital world. We have been lucky to share great models for citizenship like former Stanley student paraplegic mountain climber Steve Wampler and female education activist Malala Yousafzai.
Students then had the opportunity to show their character and citizenship by participating in our annual canned food drive. Stanley students brought in 7,561 pounds of canned food for the Contra Costa Food Bank! Many thanks go to the Leadership Class, the PE Department, and teachers Victoria Shegoian, Geoff McCalmont and Rachel Pledger for helping to make this event such a huge success. Finally, in a continued partnership with the Lafayette Police Department to promote bike safety, officers came at lunch this past Wednesday to speak to students about being safe cyclists. They spoke about the importance of wearing helmets, following traffic laws, being visible to other vehicles, and watching for traffic and other hazards. We appreciate Officers Black, Shaman and Comly for their time and commitment to the safety of our students and cyclists in the Lafayette community. Thanks for your continued support! PTA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
| |
|
Dear Fellow Parents, We have formed a new committee chair position called Helping Hands to support Stanley families in need with meals, driving, etc. I would like to thank Sarah Carrillo who has stepped up to chair this important job in our Stanley community. If you would like to help out on her committee or if you know of a family in need, please contact her directly at carrillo1217@aol.com. Thank you Sarah! Binder Hospital could use some parent volunteers. This is a really important program we offer for kids who need help with organization. I remember when my older son was attending Stanley a few years ago, he was sent to Binder Hospital and he came home all excited about his new organized binder and how they were so nice and helpful! I couldn't seem to get him organized, but Binder Hospital could. Would you consider helping out once or twice a month on Tuesday or Thursday from 11:40-12:40 to support kids as they sort through and better organize their backpacks and school work? If interested, please contact our chair, Renee Lim, directly at itsthem@comcast.net. I know your support would be much appreciated! Did you know that the Stanley PTA helps to fund math support during lunch and after school? If you child could use extra help in any area of math, every week our wonderful teachers are available Monday, Wednesday and Friday during lunch, and Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:00-4:00 PM. Please encourage your student to take advantage of this free help. Also, all math teachers are available by appointment. Please see this Math Help flyer for more information. Wishing you a safe and relaxing Presidents' Day Weekend! Kelly Mains

BINDER HOSPITAL

|
Binder Hospital Needs YOU!
Do you enjoy that sense of accomplishment when you've helped someone, anyone, organize themselves? If so, this is the opportunity you've been waiting for!
Binder Hospital is in search of 4-6 volunteers who are available Tuesday OR Thursday from 11:40-12:40 to help kids sort through and better organize their backpacks and school work. This is minimal volunteer time - once or twice a month is sufficient and would be a HUGE help to the teachers and current volunteers managing the program.

Great news from the German department: 3 students won prizes in the national German writing contest. Out of almost 800 submissions throughout the USA, there were 70 winners including Stanley's Anika Thompson, Anna Weier and Kylie Wood. They were awarded diplomas and gift certificates by the representative of the German ministry of education, Alexander Wildgans. Only 3 German teachers in Northern California had students selected for this honor. Teacher Claudia Windfuhr is all smiles!

7th ~ Jake Cronin
8th ~ Laura Bertolami
What is "Wildcat of the Week"?
Each week, one student from each grade level is chosen by a faculty committee and is selected as a Wildcat of the Week based on his/her academic efforts and demonstration of character as it relates to our Six Pillars - Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. These student role models will be further honored by participating in a special event at the end of the year. It is the intent of this award to encourage all students to demonstrate Stanley Spirit through positive character.

INDEPENDENT STUDY/ABSENCES
| |
| Each time your child misses school for any reason (sick, vacation, others) the Lafayette School District loses $51 per day in revenues from the state. Attendance in school is best for your child's education. If your child is ill, keep him/her home until well enough to return to school. If you must take your child on a trip for 5 days or more, please notify the office so that they may provide you with an Independent Study packet (please give the school at least 2 weeks notice for an Independent Study request) to help him/her keep up with schoolwork while away. Doing so is a WIN-WIN scenario. Your child keeps pace with the class and is considered PRESENT on those days (NOT ABSENT) for State funding purposes. However, for absences less than five days or absences greater than 5 days without a completed Independent Study, your child misses invaluable instruction time and the state withholds funding from the District at $51/day. The District strongly recommends that trips and vacations be scheduled during non-school days. Thank you!

Holocaust Survivor Dora Sorell presents
Auschwitz: A Survivor's Tale
The Lafayette Library welcomes Berkeley resident Dora Sorell, 94-year-old Auschwitz survivor, retired physician and lecturer. She was born in Sighet, a small town in northern Romania, in a traditional Jewish family. When she graduated high school in 1940, the War had begun and the occupying Hungarian fascist regime started to persecute the Jews. In 1944 the Nazis occupied Hungary, and the entire Jewish population of her town was deported to Auschwitz where she lost her parents, two brothers and most of her extended family.
Mrs. Sorell is the author of Tell the Children: Letters to Miriam, told in the form of letters to her granddaughter about her experiences during the War and losses during the Holocaust. The book will be available for purchase and signing at the event.
This free program will be held at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center on Saturday, February 20 from 1:00-3:00 PM, in the Community Hall. Register online at tinyurl.com/DoraSorell.
