Principal's Message

Hello Stanley Families-

I want to thank the cast and crew of Wildcats on Stage for a wonderful production of "The Taming of The Shrew."  I saw the Friday night production, and I was incredibly impressed with the polished and professional performance!   Thanks to our long-time Wildcats on Stage parent coordinator Gabrielle Ohleyer and her staff for another great show!

It is with mixed emotions that I announce that our secretary, Dawn Lynn Lanier, has accepted a position in the District Office as Mary Maddux's assistant.  We are in the process of identifying a replacement for Ms. Lanier and hope to have the position filled as quickly as possible.  We will miss her very much and wish her luck in her new job next door!

Stanley Music is proud to present two evenings of Winter Concerts next week.  Monday, December 14th's concert will feature the Bronze Band, Cadet Band Period 4, Cadet Band Period 5, Gold Band and Silver Band, while Tuesday the 15th's performers include Chorus, Orchestra, and Strings Intermezzo.  Please join us to see this remarkable group of performers who will certainly put you in the winter holiday mood.  Both concerts begin at 7:30 PM in the Stanley gym.

Please remember that Friday the 18th is a minimum day with a noon dismissal.  Our students will also enjoy a holiday concert performed by Stanley music students.  Full schedule details can be found on the Stanley website home page

Finally, I hope everyone will take some time to disconnect, relax and recharge this holiday season. In a community with so many engaging opportunities for students, I hope you find some real "down time" to enjoy and be thankful for the many gifts we have in Lafayette, especially our family and loved ones.

PTA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear Fellow Parents,

Like you, I'm concerned when I hear about a child getting hit by a car on the way to school (which happened last month).  We are grateful that the student only sustained minor injuries.  Let's all do our part to slow down.  When we each slow down, we get others to slow down.  Please make safety a top priority whether you drive, walk or ride bikes to and from school.  Please watch the crosswalks carefully and stop fully at stop signs. Be kind to the crossing guards.  They do an important and difficult job.  Let's work together as a community and as neighbors to keep children safe.

December is a slower month for the PTA, however, we are looking forward to January when we have our next PTA General Meeting on Thursday, January 21st.  Please plan to join us.  We are working on a Parent Education night to be held in conjunction with our PTA General Meeting.  More information to come.  Click here to see our agenda. If you have something to add to the agenda, please email me at president@stanleypta.org.

Recently, our eScrip chair, Wendy Gilberd, (thank you, Wendy) sent a breakdown of what we have earned since June and it's a whopping $8,100 without having to really do much of anything.  Passive fundraisers are nice because the PTA earns money without trying.  Thank you for those of you who have signed up for eScrip.  If you haven't, please do so by clicking on this link to the PTA website for more information.

Just the other day, the PTA accepted a check for $784.36 from the Lafayette Chamber for the Reservoir Run. Unfortunately our chair, Leslie Lomond, couldn't make it but our Executive Vice President, Caren Kline, accepted it on her behalf.  Thank you again, Leslie, for all of your hard work recruiting runners and volunteers.

Wishing you a safe and wonderful holiday break with your families.  I look forward to seeing you in January.

Season's Greetings,

Kelly Mains

PTA LEGISLATION
Greetings Stanley Families,

After an eight-year stalemate, Congress has finally approved, and President Obama has signed, the reauthorization of a key federal education law, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, titled the Every Student Succeeds Act (and replacing No Child Left Behind).  The articles below offer further details about the impact of this development.

VP, Legislation

Following a vote by the U.S. House of Representatives last week, the U.S. Senate today overwhelmingly approved, 85-12, to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, ending more than a decade of federal education policy under the beleaguered and much criticized No Child Left Behind Act. The legislation now goes to President Barack Obama, who has indicated that he will sign it.

By Louis Freedberg and John Fensterwald, EdSource Today

Calling a bipartisan bill signing a "Christmas miracle," President Barack Obama wasted no time signing the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, titled the Every Student Succeeds Act, which the Contra Costa Times coverageSenate had overwhelming approved less than 24 hours earlier.

We Need Your Help to Power Up
Our Biggest Party of the Year

What's more fun than getting together with friends? Try...getting together with old friends, meeting new and raising money for LPIE! The LPIE Power Party is coming up in February 2016 and as part of the event's fundraising efforts we will again have our enormously popular Pay-to-Play parties available for sign ups. We are looking for YOU to host a Pay-to-Play with your friends so we can fill up the walls with fun things to do together in the months following the Power Party.

What is a Pay-to-Play?  Pay-to-Plays are parties planned and donated by one or more families. Parties can be for mom's only (e.g., game night; spa night; shopping event; exercise; cooking class); dad's only (e.g., spectator sport event, cards, music, participatory sporting event), or adult party (e.g., dance party, casino night, or get-togethers with various themes).  If you are interested in hosting or joining a group to host a Pay-to-Play, send an email to Barbara Laurenson by January 10, 2016 and we'll get you going.

WILDCATS OF THE WEEK
6th ~ Will Stryker
7th ~ Quinn Deeming
8th ~ Jane Gundacker

What is "Wildcat of the Week"?
Each week, one student from each grade level is chosen by a faculty committee and is selected as a Wildcat of the Week based on his/her academic efforts and demonstration of character as it relates to our Six Pillars - Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. These student role models will be further honored by participating in a special event at the end of the year. It is the intent of this award to encourage all students to demonstrate Stanley Spirit through positive character.
INDEPENDENT STUDY/ABSENCES
Each time your child misses school for any reason (sick, vacation, others) the Lafayette School District loses $51 per day in revenues from the state. Attendance in school is best for your child's education. If your child is ill, keep him/her home until well enough to return to school. If you must take your child on a trip for 5 days or more, please notify the office so that they may provide you with an Independent Study packet (please give the school at least 2 weeks notice for an Independent Study request) to help him/her keep up with schoolwork while away. Doing so is a WIN-WIN scenario. Your child keeps pace with the class and is considered PRESENT on those days (NOT ABSENT) for State funding purposes. However, for absences less than five days or absences greater than 5 days without a completed Independent Study, your child misses invaluable instruction time and the state withholds funding from the District at $51/day. The District strongly recommends that trips and vacations be scheduled during non-school days. Thank you!

Do You Like to Sing?

Contra Costa Children's Chorus, a non-profit community based organization for boys and girls 4-15, now in its 32st year, is accepting new members for the spring semester.

Besides singing and performing music of all genres, music theory skills are taught at every regular rehearsal. This emphasis helps to provide a unique choral music education experience that produces well-rounded young musicians and choral singers.

Rehearsals are held weekly in Lafayette at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 1035 Carol Lane. Placement interviews are being held during the month of January. Choristers are placed in levels that are age appropriate. No experience is needed for our first 3 levels. For more information, visit www.childrenschorus.org and fill out the registration form under  "Join Us" or email frontdesk@childrenschorus.org.
