Principal's Message
Hello Stanley Families -
I hope your Friday was exciting with all of the Halloween and World Series glow abounding-

We are thrilled that with the support of LPIE we have been able to hire a part-time,  site-based technology coordinator  to help guide and support our staff with their continuing implementation of technology in their classrooms.  Please join me in welcoming Lisa Le Lapo to the district.  Lisa has a Master's in Education with a concentration in instructional leadership, a clear multiple subject credential, and a graduate certification in network and communications management.  She was the Director of Instructional Innovation & STEM Initiatives at Holy Names High School, an all-girls school in Oakland.  While at Holy Names, Lisa helped implement many innovative programs, including their Bring-Your-Own-iPad program  and a  1:1 Google Chromebook program.  We are excited to have Lisa here three days a week; she will be splitting the rest of her time with the K-5 sites.  Welcome Lisa!

I wanted to share with you again one of the many valuable resources we have received from our affiliation with Challenge Success.  With so many things going on in our lives as parents and educators, it is good to remind ourselves of lists like this to help maintain some balance and perspective.  For more information about Challenge Success, visit the tab on our Stanley website.

Thank you for your continued support-

PTA Legislative Report

Election Day is just days away. Be informed, and don't forget to vote on November 4th!

School chief candidates diverge on key issues

By John Fensterwald, EdSource Today

Tom Torlakson and Marshall Tuck agree on some key policies but disagree on some hot-button political issues. Here's a summary of where the two candidates for state superintendent of public instruction stand.

California State PTA takes a NEUTRAL position on Proposition 2 for the November 2014 ballot

California State PTA has voted to take a NEUTRAL position on Proposition 2, a constitutional amendment that will appear on the November 2014 general election ballot.

READ California State PTA's full position paper on Proposition 2.

Proposition 2 would:

  • Require annual transfer of 1.5% of general fund revenues to state budget stabilization account.

  • Require additional transfer of personal capital gains tax revenues exceeding 8% of general fund revenues to budget stabilization account and, under certain conditions, a dedicated K-14 school reserve fund.

  • Require that half the budget stabilization account revenues be used to repay state debts and unfunded liabilities.

  • Allow limited use of funds in case of emergency or if there is a state budget deficit.

  • Cap budget stabilization account at 10% of general fund revenues, direct remainder to infrastructure.

California State PTA policies that apply to Proposition 2 are General Principles 5 and 8 of the Legislation Platform.  General Principle 5 provides a basis for supporting Proposition 2 because it establishes greater fiscal responsibility than we have seen for several years.  However, General Principle 8 provides authority for opposing Proposition 2 because it may not protect adequate funding for public education.

In addition, the impact of Proposition 2 is uncertain, and depends on the condition of future state economies and decisions yet to be made.

Accordingly, because of that uncertainty, and since Proposition 2 advances fiscal responsibility but does not protect adequate funding for public education, the California State PTA Board of Managers has taken a NEUTRAL position on Proposition 2.

Prescription Drug Dangers
Tuesday, November 18, 6:30-8:00 PM
Stanley Middle School Library

Were you aware that prescription drug abuse is America's fastest growing substance abuse problem and more people die from prescription drug overdoses in the U.S. than from car accidents?  Because of the prevalence of prescription drug use in our culture, thousands of children ages 5 and younger are seen in emergency rooms every year due to accidental drug poisonings, and every day thousands of youth 12-17 abuse a prescription pain killer for the first time.   Sadly, no family is immune to the dangers of prescription drugs.

Parents April Rovero and Tom Gilmore will share their personal stories and along with other professionals, give guidance to parents on how prescription drug abuse is impacting our local communities; which  prescription drugs are most abused and their effects; medicine safety tips; signs of prescription drug abuse and how to talk to your doctor about appropriate prescription drug use for child.

Sponsored by Lafayette School District Parent Education and National Coalition Against Prescription Drug Abuse

LPIE at Stanley

LPIE ANNUAL GIVING UPDATE

As of October 1st, parents and community members throughout Lafayette have generously donated $1.5M towards our fundraising goal of $2.5M for 2014-15. And Stanley parents have contributed $341,000 towards the $658,800 LPIE commitment to Stanley students.

Kudos for a job well done - but we still need your help to hit our financial and participation goals! How can you help?

  • If you haven't already done so, please join other Stanley parents by making a contribution. We ask for $800 per student, but please give at a level that is comfortable for your family.Options are available to support LPIE at higher levels through our Honor Roll Program and/or Leaders Circle. And monthly payment plans are available. Since we are striving for 100% participation, any contribution you make will make a difference!

  • Check to see if your company has a matching gift program. Last year, LPIE raised over $216,000 in matching gifts! Matching gifts can really add up and have a significant impact on our students. Plus, they count toward your giving level, so it's worth asking the question!

Thank you, Stanley parents, for all you do to support LPIE, champion our students' education, and help fulfill our collective goals!

FOR LPIE'S SAKE, DON'T MISS THE GLASS PUMPKIN PATCH!

Looking for that special something to grace your table or kitchen counter this fall? A beautiful Walker & Bowes glass pumpkin might just be the answer! Muse Design is hosting the Walker & Bowes Glass Pumpkin Patch event at The Art Room and will donate 10% of all sales to LPIE! Pumpkins will be on display until November 20th.

And look for more information about an Artist's Reception on November 14th and a glass blowing demonstration on November 15th. Be sure to stop by to pick up a pumpkin (or two) for yourself, and consider another one (or two) for gift giving. The more (pumpkins), the merrier - for you and for LPIE!

SWEET OFFERINGS

In addition to our regular monthly e-newsletter The Slice, LPIE is also publishing a new Partner e-newsletter, Sweet Offerings. We are immensely appreciative of the support our local business community gives to our schools through continued partnerships with, and contributions to, LPIE. If we-the families of children attending Lafayette schools-cherish and reward these partnerships, the entire community will benefit. Please keep an eye out for Sweet Offerings and make sure to support these local merchants.

LPIE BUSINESS PARTNERS

LPIE relies on the generosity of local businesses to help meet our revenue goals. Please check out our home page to learn more about our current partners or our Business Partner page to learn how to become a LPIE Business Partner.
