Hello Stanley Families -
| |
What an exciting week here at Stanley. We enjoyed our first Stanley dance Friday night, and held a compelling and informative parent education event featuring Stanford researcher and Stanley parent Dr. Jennifer Aaker. To top it off, we all got to experience an eclipse at school!
During her presentation, Dr. Aaker spoke about the importance of purpose, and finding meaning in your work. For me, it was a good reminder that our two signature philanthropic clubs, Opportunity Knocks and Global Relief Outreach, are two excellent ways to pursue this purpose. Both are open to all interested students and are a great way to give back to your school and community in many different ways. For more information about these two great Stanley clubs, please visit our website. Clubs are located under the Student Programs tab.
Please note that next week is Red Ribbon Week, a week that emphasizes the importance of making healthy choices and highlights our Six Pillars of Character program. Friday we are looking forward to our Halloween parade, which we hold the last hour of the day and is a great Stanley event involving the entire campus. You can find the full schedule on the School Loop calendar.
Thanks again for all of your support!

PTA Announcements & Events
|
|
|
Thanks to all of you who joined us this past Thursday for our PTA meeting and Parent Ed night. We had a full house--our guest speaker, Dr. Jennifer Aaker, really benefitted from coat-tailing on all the attendance to hear PTA financial reports! :)
Approached from an angle few of us may have previously considered, Jennifer Aaker gave an inspiring talk about how we can engage our kids and help them learn to see themselves as authors of their daily life stories. That shift in focus on the bigger picture and on story gives room for mistakes, creativity and agency--all of which ultimately helps build kids able to weather life's challenges and to figure out what gives their unique lives meaning.
...Those are a few sentences to give you the gist of an expansive, eloquently-delivered talk. Please view Dr. Aaker's full presentation and prepare to have your thoughts provoked. We've also posted additional resources for further reading that Jennifer recommends. You can find all of those links here.
Enjoy your week!

Prescription Drug Dangers
Tuesday, November 18, 2014, 6:30-8:00 PM
Stanley Middle School, Library
Were you aware that prescription drug abuse is America's fastest growing substance abuse problem and more people die from prescription drug overdoses in the U.S. than from car accidents? Because of the prevalence of prescription drug use in our culture, thousands of children ages 5 and younger are seen in emergency rooms every year due to accidental drug poisonings, and every day thousands of youth 12-17 abuse a prescription pain killer for the first time. Sadly, no family is immune to the dangers of prescription drugs. Parents April Rovero and Tom Gilmore will share their personal stories and along with other professionals, give guidance to parents on how prescription drug abuse is impacting our local communities; which prescription drugs are most abused and their effects; medicine safety tips; signs of prescription drug abuse and how to talk to your doctor about appropriate prescription drug use for child.

Global Relief Outreach Club
|
|
Dear Stanley Parents, The GRO Club (Global Relief Outreach) will be having a coin drive starting Monday, October 27th and ending Friday, October 31st. Please encourage your children to bring any amount of funds to their second period class. All of the coin drive donations will go to UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund), which is currently supporting child refugees in Syria, scaling up its response to protect health workers and families as they respond to the Ebola outbreaks, delivering lifesaving assistance to people displaced throughout Iraq, and coordinating humanitarian action in Gaza as children return to school after months of intense violence. This activity is also a friendly competition between the second period classes. The class that raises the most money will receive a pizza party. Dollar bills of any amount will also be accepted as well as coins. Thank you for helping!
Sincerely, The Members of GRO

News from the Foreign Language Department
|
|
The German department would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the families who hosted a German student from Heidelberg. It is a goal of the Common Core to make learning as authentic as possible and what could be more authentic than using your language skills with a kid from another country. Each host family is one important piece of the giant puzzle to make the visit possible. We could not have done it without these families: Baker, Connor, Finch, Fink, Foox, Gregory, Heckle, Koerner, McBride, Noonen, Pecher/Laemmlen, Poon, Rice, Sebree, Thompson, Weier, Zarembinski, and back-up hosts: Da Conceicao, Reddam, Seymour.

LPIE ANNUAL GIVING UPDATE
As of October 1st, parents and community members throughout Lafayette have generously donated $1.5M towards our fundraising goal of $2.5M for 2014-15. And Stanley parents have contributed $341,000 towards the $658,800 LPIE commitment to Stanley students.
Kudos for a job well done - but we still need your help to hit our financial and participation goals! How can you help?
-
If you haven't already done so, please join other Stanley parents by making a contribution. We ask for $800 per student, but please give at a level that is comfortable for your family.Options are available to support LPIE at higher levels through our Honor Roll Program and/or Leaders Circle. And monthly payment plans are available. Since we are striving for 100% participation, any contribution you make will make a difference!
-
Check to see if your company has a matching gift program. Last year, LPIE raised over $216,000 in matching gifts! Matching gifts can really add up and have a significant impact on our students. Plus, they count toward your giving level, so it's worth asking the question!
Thank you, Stanley parents, for all you do to support LPIE, champion our students' education, and help fulfill our collective goals!

FOR LPIE'S SAKE, DON'T MISS THE GLASS PUMPKIN PATCH!
Looking for that special something to grace your table or kitchen counter this fall? A beautiful Walker & Bowes glass pumpkin might just be the answer! Muse Design is hosting the Walker & Bowes Glass Pumpkin Patch event at The Art Room and will donate 10% of all sales to LPIE! Pumpkins will be on display October 15th - November 20th. While there is plenty of time to delight in them, remember, you'll be right around the corner on October 22nd enjoying your Smitten ice cream, so why not make it an (LPIE) afternoon? Pick up a pumpkin (or two) for yourself, and consider another one (or two) for gift giving. The more (pumpkins), the merrier - for you and for LPIE!
SWEET OFFERINGS
In addition to our regular monthly e-newsletter The Slice, LPIE is also publishing a new Partner e-newsletter, Sweet Offerings. We are immensely appreciative of the support our local business community gives to our schools through continued partnerships with, and contributions to, LPIE. If we-the families of children attending Lafayette schools-cherish and reward these partnerships, the entire community will benefit. Please keep an eye out for Sweet Offerings and make sure to support these local merchants.
LPIE BUSINESS PARTNERS
LPIE relies on the generosity of local businesses to help meet our revenue goals. Please check out our home page to learn more about our current partners or our Business Partner page to learn how to become a LPIE Business Partner.
