Conversation Cafe: Exclusively at Oak Park LibraryConversationCafe
As you may know, our group rotated between three libraries since we closed down our office on Marion Street. At the suggestion of one of our veteran tutors and a library staff member, we wrote a letter to OPPL's Executive Director, David Seleb, requesting weekly use of the book discussion room and it was approved, beginning in April.

We would like to thank David Seleb, along with:
  • David Sokol, LVWCC Tutor and Oak Park Library Trustee
  • Michele Paladines, Oak Park Library Librarian
  • Jerica Copeny, LVWCC Board Member and Oak Park Librarian
  • Jasmine Brown, LVWCC Partnerships Specialist
  • Conversation Cafe tutors and learners

Without your support and encouragement, this would not be possible.

Partner of the Month: Thomas Ford Memorial LibraryPartnerMonth
By Jasmine Brown

This month we were welcomed by the Thomas Ford Memorial Library in Western Springs. We often visit libraries in our service area to put up information tables or give presentations to library staff with two goals in mind:

  • Bring awareness of our program to residents.
  • Recruit potential learners and tutors.

Two evenings in February were dedicated to visiting and getting to know potential tutors at the Thomas Ford Memorial Library. The atmosphere is great for personal tutoring, and they offer meeting rooms for groups of 4 or more. Six separate stations offer ample table top space and comfortable seating.

The Reference staff is very welcoming and they are happy to answer any questions you may have regarding literacy materials or reserving space. The Library is located at 800 Chestnut Street, Western Springs, IL (map). For more information please contact the Reference department at (708) 246-0520.

Our New Program Services CommitteeProgramServices
On February 25th, our newly revived Program Services Committee gathered together at the Northlake Library. In attendance:

Ian Gosse, Oak Park Library - Maze Branch
Lisa Knasiak, Director of River Grove Library & Trustee of Brookfield Library
Kathy Ladell, Northlake Library
Michele Paladines, Oak Park Library - Main
Elsworth Rockefeller, Oak Park Library - Main
Jasmine Brown, LVWCC Partnerships Specialist
Esther Chase, LVWCC Board President

We are so fortunate that our public libraries support our work. We are collaborating to find simple ways to facilitate learner referrals and reduce learner waitlist time. If you are a public library staff member and would like to help us improve our programs, please email Esther at echase@lvwcc.org

Many thanks to Kathy Ladell for hosting us. She has already successfully proctored our exams at Northlake and referred 6 learners and 1 prospective tutor to us.
