Literacy Lines, November 2014
In Memory of Tutor Mina Riddle
Mina I. Riddle, 74, a former tutor of ours in Oak Park, died on June 26, 2014.

Mina was a graduate of Michigan State, served for a brief time in the U.S. Army, and was a social worker for the state of Illinois. She moved to Oak Park in 1978, worked in the daycare field, and became a foster mother. She also worked in the Oak Park school district with special needs children. Active in the League of Women Voters, she volunteered with the Oak Park-River Forest Historical Society and tutored English language learners with LVWCC.

Thank you to the family and friends of Mina Riddle for your $100 donation to LVWCC in honor of Mina's lifetime of giving. We appreciate your support.
You're Invited to our Tutor Roundtable
Our new quarterly Tutor Roundtable will keep you informed about what's happening at LVWCC.

It is also a great opportunity to talk with other tutors and connect through your shared experiences. Both ABE and ESL tutors are welcome.

This month's Tutor Roundtable will include some prospective tutors who would love to hear about your current and former learners and how you have helped them--even what you have struggled with.

If you are a new tutor, prospective tutor, or a tutor on break, and you would like to attend, please send an email to Mari at msmith@lvwcc.org.

Saturday, November 8th
11:30 am - 1:00 pm

OPRF Community Foundation grants LVWCC $5k for Program Support
We are happy to receive $5,000 toward program growth this year from the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation, whose mission it is to inspire philanthropy and to steward the community toward sustainability and well-being.

To achieve the results we set forth in our application, we must serve 30 new learners with 16 new volunteer tutors. Learners will come from Cicero, Elmwood Park, Forest Park, and Maywood. Read More
Tutor of the Month: Ruth Foley
Ruth Foley started tutoring with LVWCC in 2007 and she finds tutoring rewarding because it keeps her engaged with the world.

Why did you decide to tutor?

"I had retired and wanted to continue to use my teaching skills. I wanted the challenge of teaching again."

What is your favorite part of tutoring?

"The light bulb thing" was Ruth's quick response, referring to that moment when her student understands the lesson. "It is fascinating to learn about all these different cultures; everybody's a lot alike." Read More

State Funds Received Early This Year
The financial outlook of any organization is a primary concern to its board members, staff members, volunteers, and the community. We are proud to announce that cash flow will not be a challenge this year.

In years past, it was necessary for LVWCC to "lend" our adult volunteer literacy program the money to operate until state funds were released, sometimes as late as March. That's 9 months into our fiscal year.

Luckily, we have been working diligently to become more compliant with the state. As a result, we received more money this year than last, and we received our funds on September 24th--just 3 months into the year. It's a big win for our adult volunteer literacy program and helps lay the foundation for improvement and growth at LVWCC.
Fun + English = Funglish

Last Saturday, our ESL Beginner Speaking group at the Berwyn Public Library played a rousing game of Funglish. We learned new vocabulary and had a lot of great laughs.

If you would like to participate as a facilitator on rotation with this group, please send an email to Esther at echase@lvwcc.org.
