CITY NEWS
GO BLACKHAWKS!
Good Luck to our Chicago Blackhawks in the playoffs!
Door to Door Solicitor Ban Lifted
The City had previously instituted a temporary ban on door to door solicitation due to several home burglaries that took place last fall. The ban will expire as of Monday, June 1, 2015, as municipalities are not permitted to permanently ban home solicitors.

Solicitors must be licensed with the City of Darien.  Applications are available on our website, or at City Hall, 1702 Plainfield Road.

The City of Darien provides a free no solicitor sticker to residents, available at City Hall.  If a solicitor comes to your door and does not have a City of Darien solicitor ID card, or knocks if you have a no solicitor sign, please call 9-1-1.
Don't Become an Easy Target - Lock your Car Doors!

Residents are reminded to lock their cars and take or hide valuables in the trunk so they don't create an easy target for burglary and theft.  Police call most car break-ins a crime of opportunity. Criminals walk through the neighborhood and parking lots looking for items to steal with the goal of finding vehicles that are unlocked.  The large percentage of car break-ins in the Chicago metro area are done to vehicles that are unlocked. In Darien last summer, we had 56 reports of items stolen from cars. 83.9% of these incidents were to unlocked vehicles.

Don't let the criminals win, lock your car doors, do not leave keys in your car, and keep garage door openers out of sight!

Constellation New City of Darien Electrical Supplier

In 2012 Darien voters authorized the City to negotiate electric supply rates on the behalf of its residents. We are pleased to announce that Constellation has been selected as our new supplier. This includes a 26 month program with a fixed price of 6.90 per kwh for the first year, and 6.44 per kwh the second year. This rate is lower than the city's current program of 7.753 per kwh, which expires July 2015.

Residents began receiving notices in the mail on May 1 from Constellation, allowing them to opt-out of the program if they so choose. This is a legitimate mailing, and unless residents choose to opt out no further action is necessary.  You will be automatically enrolled with Constellation.

Please contact Paul Nosek at 630-353-8104 for additional information.

2015 Private Property Emerald Ash Borer Program

The City of Darien has recently received competitive quotes for the treatment of the Emerald Ash Borer located on private property. The recommended vendor is Tree and Turf Professionals. Certain Building Permit Fees Waived

The Darien City Council approved to continue for the third year in a row to waive certain building permit fees. The goal is to encourage home improvements and provide a financial incentive to those residents that are planning home projects. The proposal waives the building permit fee for residents and business/property owners. Permits must still be obtained, and fees paid to outside vendors necessary to ensure the safety of the project are still applicable. Below is an example of permits that will have permit fees waived now thru April, 2016.  For more information please call the Building Department at 630-353-8115.

COUNTY/STATE/FEDERAL NEWS
DuPage County Health Department West Nile Virus Index

To help DuPage County residents protect themselves against West Nile virus (WNV), the DuPage County Health Department has created a Personal Protection Index (PPI) that will inform residents of the amount of WNV activity in the county, as well as prevention steps that are recommended.

The PPI provides residents with a current snapshot of WNV activity, ranging from zero to four, with zero being no activity and four announcing multiple human cases of WNV in DuPage County. The PPI will be updated every Wednesday at 3pm, by Health Department staff, during the surveillance season. The PPI will change to match the risk level determined for that period. The index can be found here.  When activated, residents should follow the 4 D's of prevention that coincide with the PPI risk level.
