DuPage County Residents Urged to be Mindful of Water Quality this Fall

With the fall season beginning this week, it is time for football, cooler days and changing leaves. However, the changing season also brings the inevitable need for yard cleanup.

All Dupage County residents live in a watershed, meaning most everything entering storm drains eventually runs into rivers or streams. In autumn, leaves are oftentimes blown or swept into storm drains and waterways and can become a source of water pollution. Once they reach waterways, leaves decompose and release phosphorous into the water, which can result in algae blooms and decreased oxygen for fish.

However, pollutants are not the only problem. Leaves can also build up along curbs, gutters and storm drains, which blocks stormwater runoff from entering this drainage infrastructure. Should a major weather event occur, this can lead to localized flooding.

DuPage County residents can help to keep excess leaves out of storm sewers and waterways by engaging in a number of activities.

  • Start a compost pile or add leaves to an existing one. While the organic debris is not ideal for aquatic life, composted leaves and other organic materials are an excellent resource for fertilizing your garden in the summer months. It provides necessary nutrients, while also reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.
  • Leaves can be chopped into small pieces using a mulching mower, which will decompose directly on lawns. The leaf pieces can also be collected and spread around flowerbeds and shrubs as mulch.

Mosquito Abatement Program

The City of Darien has a comprehensive mosquito abatement program of treating standing water areas to eliminate mosquito larvae. The program is conducted by CLARK, who leads the industry by pioneering, developing and delivering environmentally-responsible and integrated mosquito control solutions. These programs are more effective than spraying and kill a very high percentage of potential mosquitoes.  Once mosquitoes grow into adults and begin to fly, treatments are much less effective.  Additionally, there have been concerns that the chemicals sprayed into the air may be harmful to human health.

We do ask residents to assist in reducing nuisance mosquitoes by regularly changing bird baths, clearing gutters, and maintaining other areas that may hold water.   Additionally, experts strongly recommend using mosquito repellant when going out during mosquito season.  The following link to the DuPage County Health Department provides additional information on mosquito control.  http://www.dupagehealth.org/protection-against-mosquitoes

Alert - Do Not Allow Entry to Your Home!

On August 29, 2014 at approximately 3:00pm, a resident in the 300 block of Janet reported a male subject knocking on her back door. The male stated he was from a water company and needed entry to residence to check the clarity of water for contamination. The male was told to wait outside while the resident obtained a glass of water. The male entered the residence but remained at the doorway after being observed by another resident. The male told the resident the water looked fine and left.

The male was described as Hispanic, age 50, 5'08 in height, black hair and moustache. The male was wearing a yellow shirt with no company logo.

Please be aware that city workers will never ask for entry to your residence without an appointment. City workers will be wearing shirts with the city logo on them, have City of Darien identifications cards, and will be in vehicles marked with the City of Darien on the side.

The Darien Police strongly recommend that residents keep their storm or screen door locked at all times. This will provide a secured barrier. Do not allow anyone entry to your residence that you have not personally contacted and arranged an appointment.

Call the Darien Police at 9-1-1 with anything suspicious. The police officer will come out to your residence and verify a work order or identity. Remain vigilant to your neighbors as well.

Drop Off Unwanted Medications Saturday, September 27

DU PAGE COUNTY - Saturday, Sept. 27, is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and the DuPage County Health Department encourages residents to drop off their unwanted medications at any of 12 DuPage County RxBOX collection sites on Sept. 27 or any other day.

RxBOX is a free service offered to DuPage County residents by the Health Department, in partnership with municipal and county law enforcement agencies, to safely remove unwanted medications from homes, as well as contribute to a better environment.

The national "Take-Back" initiative is sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and local law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of teen-agers that abuse prescription drugs. Studies show that every day approximately 2,500 teens get high for the first time on prescription drugs. A majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including the home medicine cabinet.

Launched by the Health Department in 2009, the RxBOX program collects medications that otherwise might have been flushed down the drain or placed in the garbage. The materials are removed periodically from the RxBOX locations and safely incinerated by a contractor provided by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency using state-of-the-art technology.

Residents who are clearing out their medicine cabinets can dispose of their old medications at any of the following RxBOX locations:

  • Addison Police Department, 3 Friendship Plaza, Addison, IL 60101
  • Bloomingdale Police Department, 201 S. Bloomingdale Road, Bloomingdale, IL 60108
