CITY NEWS
Heritage Plaza Development
The City of Darien has been preparing to develop the property on Cass Avenue between 75th Street and Plainfield Road.  Chase Bank is now constructing their newest branch on 75th Street while the City of Darien has designed a project with two buildings that will be constructed on the remainder of the property.  The design from Shive Hattery shows how the development will appear upon completion.  The City of Darien is now finalizing the construction cost and project details, anticipating that the work will begin this Fall.  To view a larger rendering of the Plaza click here.

If you have any questions on the project, please call Dan Gombac at (630) 353-8106.

Hydrant Flushing this Week
The City of Darien Municipal Services Department will be flushing fire hydrants beginning Sunday, April 6.  The flushing activities will begin at 10:00 p.m. through 6:00 a.m. and takes approximately one week to complete.  The City flushes all of its hydrants in order to remove any accumulation of minerals and other deposits that exist in the water main to maintain a high quality of water.  In addition, the Municipal Services Department inspects all fire hydrants to make sure that they are working properly.  As the flushing process removes accumulated deposits in the water main, residents may temporarily experience some discolored water.  If this should occur, simply run the cold water until the line clears (3 to 10 minutes).  The City will post signs in advance of the area that is going to be flushed in order to advise residents of when the hydrant flushing will be taking place.  If you have any further questions, please contact the Municipal Services Department at (630) 353-8105
Darien Resident Water Rate

On January 1st, the City of Chicago and DuPage Water Commission increased the price of water that is pumped from Lake Michigan to the City of Darien and all other surrounding suburbs.  This is the third of four large annual increases.  As the City pays more for water, it needs to charge more to the end user to recoup these expenses.  This year, the proposed cost for residents per each thousand gallons of water will increase from $6.40 to $7.75.  Unincorporated residents are charged 20% more than Darien residents in our system.  The fixed fee, which pays for infrastructure items such as water towers and billings, is going from $5 to $10 (unincorporated homes will pay $12). The goal is to minimize the impact of any rate increase by finding efficiencies in our system and keeping the rate as low as feasible.  If you have any questions, please call Assistant City Administrator Scott Coren at (630) 353-8104.

Help the Police Department with Video Surveillance

As part of our on-going effort to engage and partner with the community, we are rolling out a new initiative next week. The new initiative will involve a registry for private and commercial surveillance video.  The purpose of the registry is to allow the Darien Police Department to share personal video surveillance that a resident or commercial business may have captured of a crime or other activity requiring police attention. The way the program will work is that once registered, if an incident occurs near the location that has been registered, the Darien Police Department will contact the registered owner and request to view and copy any captured data relative to the incident.  This practice is currently underway in other departments and will enhance our community partnership and also increase our chances to apprehend offenders.  Please contact Stacy Sherman at ssherman@darienil.gov if you are interested in participating.

Quarterly Crime Stats Show Rise in Vehicle Break-ins

The table below reflects the crime trends in the most often reported criminal offenses in Darien.  The overall look at the quarter shows a 27.7% reduction in those incidents analyzed. Even with that decline there are some areas of concern.  Of the 14 burglary to motor vehicle incidents occurring in the city of Darien, only two (2) involved locked vehicles. In three of the remaining twelve incidents the vehicle owners were not sure that the vehicle was locked. However in nine (9) of the other incidents the vehicles were unlocked.

We must be vigilant in order to deny thieves the opportunity to remove our valuables from unlocked vehicles.  If all of the vehicles had been locked, we would likely have only had two incidents and residents would have saved countless dollars. PLEASE, let's help each other keep our valuables safe!

Refuse Sticker Rate Hike

The City of Darien is entering into it's fourth year with Advanced Disposal as its refuse hauler.  Each year on April 1st the rates go up according to the contract.  The new rate for refuse stickers is $3.31 each.  Although the rates have changed, the pickup procedure remains the same.  Any stickers you currently have are still valid, and may still be used after April 1st.

Yard Waste Pickup

Advanced Disposal began yard waste pickup on April 1.  Yard waste must be bagged in Kraft paper yard waste bags and must have 1 refuse sticker attached.  32 gallon trash cans may be used and must a have a yard waste identification label adhered to the front of the can, with a refuse sticker wrapped around the handle.  Identification labels are available at city hall for free.  For more information please contact Advanced Disposal at 708-409-9700.

Please Don't Place Branches at Curb Early

Each year the City of Darien receives numerous calls about branches left in the parkway for brush pickup.  While the City of Darien chips branches for residents, if they are put out too early they look unsightly next to the road and if left on the grass could cause damage to the lawn.  We ask that you keep your brush away from the street and find an area in the backyard until the next pickup. The brush may be placed at the curb the weekend prior to the pickup date. You may also drop off the brush at the Public Works Facility located at 1041 South Frontage Rd.

Your help in keeping Darien "A Nice Place to Live" is greatly appreciated.  If you have any questions please call Municipal Services at (630) 353-8105.

August                      25 through 29

October                    27 through 31

All branches need to be out no later than the Sunday night prior to the designated pick up week. The chipping crew can make only one pass and may complete your street as soon as Monday morning.

Don't Let Spring Rain on your Parade

Spring rain is a part of life in many areas, and there's little you can do to stop it. However, what you can do is protect your home and make sure it doesn't cost you a lot of money in damages. Use these tips to make sure your house is prepared for the downpour that's on its way.

  • Check your roof, windows, attic vents, chimneys, windows and doors for any damage. Leaks aren't just going to damage your home through the roof, so take the time to walk around and inspect all possible areas.
  • Clean your gutters or have your landscaping or gardening service make sure that they're clear. Gutters that are too full with leaves and debris can damage your roof and create costly repairs for you this spring. Leaves are mostly likely to have gathered during the late fall and winter, too.
  • Check the foundation carefully.  Take time to clear away debris.  If necessary, add fill dirt. Note any areas of cracking
  • Check appliances to make sure they're properly connected. Think of this as a spring cleaning tip - water damage from those appliances can damage your home worse than the rain.
  • Inspect your trees.  The heavy winter snows may have damaged your trees, and any maintenance repairs should be done as quickly as possible before expected spring storms arrive.

Telephone Scam - IRS

Additionally, there is another scam where the caller claims to be a representative of the Internal Revenue Service. Over 20,000 complaints have been received nationwide in the last few days. A person calls saying they are from the Internal Revenue Service and attempts to gain your personal information or tells you that you owe money to the IRS and to pay immediately. Caller ID on your phone may show the caller is the IRS or another official government agency. These calls are NOT legitimate. The IRS does not contact you by phone to demand payments. If you receive this type of call, please hang up immediately and contact your local police agency immediately to report the incident.
